But now I've used it extensively since launch date I'm over that. M11-D looks great!
fenykepesz Posted June 2, 2024 Share #283 Posted June 2, 2024 (edited) vor 11 Stunden schrieb Datsch: Well done Leica! I am very happy, as the M11-D has turned out almost exactly as I wished for in my January 2023 article: https://www.macfilos.com/2023/01/27/leica-m-d-and-my-journey-into-nature-with-this-simplest-of-digital-camera/ The ISO dial on the back is so much more tactile and easy to use (with two thumbs) than the standard M10/M11 repurposed rewind one. It's also as others have pointed out, very suited to an -D as it gives more options, being a bigger dial. Plus, unlike the M-D with its third stop markings, this looks like it will have half-stop markings, making it compatible with the shutter speed dial and most lenses ... ie two clicks up on the iso and two click down on the speed or aperture and you have the same exposure, but the the faster shutter speed you need (or whatever) so you can do more by feel and not have to stop and look at your controls .... Just to recap the basics -- it's like any M, just expose, focus and shoot. If you want exposure comp, it is immediately there on the thumbwheel, indicated with flashing dot in VF If you set to ISO-M then that is on the wheel and new for the M11-D is that ISO will be displayed in the viewfinder -- hooray! Press the thumbwheel to toggle between ISO and exposure comp. Want to change some other parameter? Then press the thumbwheel for 12s to activate Fotos. Shots remaining and battery remaining can be seen in the VF by pressing the top plate button. That's it! OK, there's a few other occasional settings like the time and date etc is an arcane sequence of button presses that you'll want to folllow the manual for, but can probably do in Fotos if that scares you. But fundamentally Leica have done a superb job here of keeping the interface simple, minimal and functional. I also applaud Leica as it looks like you could own this camera without ever having to use Fotos or WiFi, which does suit me personally but I think is also an indication of a well-thought-through product ... The essence of photography indeed ... 😃 while preparing my workflow for the new M11-D, i began to wonder what versions of Android run with FOTOS, or better, which versions do not work with FOTOS ? my mobile is a special piece hardware, an FxTec Pro1 with physical keyboard, and runs venerable Android v9. a few months ago Google PlayStore didn't let me update/upgrade FOTOS on my mobile, i don't know why, though i felt it may be an Android version issue. in the past i used FOTOS mainly/solely to adjust date/time on my current m10d. now, i didn't find any information about FOTOS' requirements in this respect. does anybody in this forum know more in this matter ? costa43 Posted June 2, 2024 Share #285 Posted June 2, 2024 I really like the design. Much prefer the iso on the back. It’s a shame it’s not brass top though. Leica is probably saving that for the m11 bp. The last push to clear stock before the m12.

Datsch Posted June 3, 2024 Share #290 Posted June 3, 2024 So I wonder if the M11-D will be immune from the M11's problems? I hope so, but let's see: you can't press play too quickly after taking a shot, so that freeze is avoided. But you can still with the M11-D do those things that appraently cause freezes: switch it on (apparently enough to cause a freeze with the latest firmware); mount an uncoded lens whilst in autodetect mode; switch off before the flashing light has stopped; use the wrong type / brand / colour of SD card; format the internal memory (using Fotos) mmmm .... this is giving me pause now ... Datsch Posted June 3, 2024 Share #291 Posted June 3, 2024 1 hour ago, Al Brown said: the potential problem with this camera could be not even knowing it froze. Well, that's is quite funny, but I think not hearing the shutter when you press the release button would be a bit of a giveaway -- that and a blinking LED ... But in seriousness, I use coded lenses, the right SD cards which I format on PC anyway, so it's really only the 'switch off whilst still writing' that could be an issue for me -- in fact I do that all the time with my M-D and it simply blinks away until the image file has been fully written, even after I have switched it off. As for the coding, I hope the M11-D will not be fussy and follow the M-D which says, "They can be used regardless of the lens features, and whether it does or does not have 6-bit coding in the bayonet." swatch Posted June 3, 2024 Share #292 Posted June 3, 2024 It seems exposure compensation can only work basically to change shutter speed as quick start guide said M-ISO setting and turn thumb wheel ( assume aperture and ISO are manually set and shutter speed is in auto mode) because in this way the photographer can only know how much of stop (shutter speed) has been changed. Is my understanding being correct? In fact I prefer the setting on film camera M7 which allows all manual settings at a glance ( aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation value ). My wish:manual aperture + manual shutter speed + ability to set compensation value in auto ISO. I don’t own M10-D but it has stand alone exposure compensation wheel on the back of the camera. But it does appear that Leica Rumors just got their hands on the QuickStart guide for M11-D: https://leicarumors.com/2024/05/31/here-is-the-upcoming-rumored-leica-m11-d-camera.aspx/ and actually you can download the full QuickStart guide from Leica at: https://leica-camera.com/sites/default/files/pm-110460-leica_m11-d_qsg.pdf Thank you! Datsch Posted June 4, 2024 Share #296 Posted June 4, 2024 (edited) So the M-D manual says: "FOR MEMORY CARDS • While a picture is being stored or the memory card is being read, it may not be removed, nor may the camera be turned off or exposed to vibrations" In my experience, the M-D has no trouble if you switch off whilst the card is still being written to. However, doing this on the vanilla M11 has appeared to cause freezes, (and may be the cause of some lost images or corrupt DNGs) so I guess if I get the M11-D I will just have to follow Leica's instructions and be less hasty with the off switch -- no big deal really. And the M11-D Quickstart also says: "MEMORY CARD • Never remove the memory card during a data save or card reading process. The camera must not be switched off or be subjected to impact or vibrations while working." Edited June 4, 2024 by Datsch
