xveruskax Posted September 20, 2023 Share #1 Posted September 20, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) So I used to shoot the Canon 50mm f1.4 LTM with an M9. For some dumb reason decided to sell the lens. Now I have an M10-P and I decided to require the lens. I find the images to be absolutely beautiful with this lens and more so with this camera. I purchased the Canon 50mm and because of its age, found it focusing and f-stop super stiff. Sent it to DAG for some work and it's perfect now. Any other folks have experiences with this lens? Advertisement Posted September 20, 2023 Posted September 20, 2023 Hi xveruskax, Take a look here Canon 50mm f1.4 LTM paired with M10-P. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
TomB_tx Posted September 20, 2023 Share #2 Posted September 20, 2023 I have the 2nd version of the Canon 1.4, and it is a nice performer. I’ve used it on a Canon 7s, and tried it on. Leica IIIf, where it just blocked the VF too much. Never saw a reason to try on my M10 - too many other lenses that I like.
Al Brown Posted September 20, 2023 Share #3 Posted September 20, 2023 This lens was dubbed by the internet as "Japanese Summilux". At the iused price of $300 it is hardly that, but is has a huge fanbase nevertheless. I had two but did not like either, they were both same make and model but rendered slightly differently - the older did better.
Pyrogallol Posted September 20, 2023 Share #4 Posted September 20, 2023 I inherited one with a Canon 7 from my friend. I used it recently wide open to see how well it performed, with good results and the rangefinder focussing was spot on.

TomB_tx Posted September 23, 2023 Share #6 Posted September 23, 2023 In 50mm I've tried Summicrons (of course - all time favorite), Summilux, Planar, CV Nokton, Elmar 2.8, Elmar-M 2.8, CV Heliar f2 & 3.5, etc. Now I use the Summarit 2.5 most of the time - images like the Summicron but smaller and faster handling. jaapv Posted September 24, 2023 Share #9 Posted September 24, 2023 I am still very impressed with the 50/1.8 It works especially nice on my Monochrom.
sinjun Posted September 24, 2023 Share #10 Posted September 24, 2023 I also have a canon 50/1.8 ltm, from 1955, and find it to be a very good performer and surprisingly compact.
Besprosvet Posted September 25, 2023 Share #11 Posted September 25, 2023 It's been my first 50mm when I got my first Leica, the M246: on monochrome sensors it works gorgeously, even wide open. I tend to use a cheap chinese light yellow filter for portraits, but with or without, I love it (sample from the last elopement I shot, f1.4). When I got the M240 as well, I did enjoy using it, but color wise, it's, let's say, a bit washed out. For some dreamy wide open portraits it's still lovely, but when I got my 50 cron v3, well, there is absolutely no match. I'd get it only if you paln to use it as a 1.4 dreamy lens. All in all it's cheap. Welcome, dear visitor! As always, lenses are a matter of personal preference and the purpose of the shot. I think the portrait is excellent for the situation. I like how the lens creates a painting-like effect. Almost like an oil color painting. Wide open it’s especially noticeable. There are circumstances where that may be welcome. I think it’s unfair to simply call it the “Japanese summilux”. It really has its own character and they’re relatively inexpensive compared to a Cron or Lux 50mm. There are situations where I prefer to use my 50mm Lux but the Canon 50mm f1.4 ltm has its place. david strachan Posted September 26, 2023 Share #13 Posted September 26, 2023 Like the Canon 135mm ltm, the Canon 50mm f1.4 (Japanese Summilux...if we must) is a truly excellent lens Beautifully built, very comfortable to use...just lovely and should suit everyone...processes very well. ...
Alberti Posted September 26, 2023 Share #14 Posted September 26, 2023 (edited) I appreciate the Canon 50 too. I must say my "MINT. EXC.+++" copy had dry grease when I got it. The focus ring and aperture just floated along. Had to send it in for a full CLA. The result was marvelous. It has it's own character. It has a nice separation of subject and background. In that sense it is unique. And even on the modern high-res sensors it performs well. It has great colours. hepcat Posted September 28, 2023 Share #16 Posted September 28, 2023 I actually keep the earlier 1952 50mm f/1.5 Sonnar design on my M10-P. I love that lens. Welcome, dear visitor! I think that some lenses from that generation shine in soft light, highlighting subtle shades and nuances of light, especially on monochrome sensors
Aldrahn Posted August 6, 2024 Share #19 Posted August 6, 2024 Canon 50mm f1.4 LTM and a Canon 85mm f2 LTM are unbelievable lenses. Considering their age.
