BeuBu Posted September 12, 2023 Share #1 Posted September 12, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I want to invest in a Summilux 24mm f/1.4 and had the chance to test a used one before I bought it. Accidentilly I figured out a hotspot exactly in the middle of the frame, if I'm shooting e.g. with f8 and had a light spot (e.g. sun or ceiling lamp) in the the upper part of the frame. The hotspot is independent from the location of the light spot in any case in the middle of the frame. I did test shots with M240 and M246 Monochrom with the same result. The hotspot in the center is less obvious and more blurred with a more open aperture, but still visible (if you know where to look). I attach 2 pictures for demonstration done with f8. Even if shooting with f8 is not my priority with this lens, I'm a bit irritated in the moment. My first thought was that it is a problem with just one lens. But last week I was able to test another used one and got more or less the same result. Has anybody experienced the same phenomen or heard about it? Would somebody be able to test her/his lens under the described conditions? I already contacted Leica customer care without getting a satisfatory answer. Thanks, Uwe Welcome, dear visitor! jdlaing Posted September 12, 2023 Share #2 Posted September 12, 2023 It’s not a hotspot. It’s a simple reflection. This is what you get shooting into a bright light source. 1

My understanding of a simple reflection is, that it is not at the same position, if the spot causing the reflection is moving?

Uwe well, your title said "hotspot" the one in the photo doesn't look like a lens hotspot, those are usually much softer, usually in the center and MUCH bigger, and are caused by coatings on the lens elements, i have seen them in infrared but never on a "normal" camera
RexGig0 Posted September 12, 2023 Share #7 Posted September 12, 2023 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) The original post is not showing a “hot spot,” in the usual meaning of the word. Shooting into the light can cause all manner of effects, including this, that I happen to have handy, in this mobile device; an OOC JPEG, shot when I was specifically trying to make this effect happen, with a Version III Elmarit-M 28mm, pre-ASPH: Welcome, dear visitor! Thanks, but as it can be seen in your picture, normal reflections from a bright spot are somehow correlated with the direction of it. In my case the hot spot (or how we want to call it) is always exactly in the center of the frame, independent of the location, left or right, of the bright spot. For this, it looks to me like hot spots which are caused in IR photography with some modified sensors and lenses. But I use a standard M240 and M246. Would you share the estimated manufacture / purchase date of the lens? My feeling is, that the (hot) spot in the center of the frame is related to a certain manufacturing batch. Meanwhile I know 2 lenses which are looking good (like yours) and 2 lenses which show this artefact. I would be really happy if Leica would comment on this, but open customer policy seems not be their strength.
kraxel69 Posted September 14, 2023 Share #11 Posted September 14, 2023 Hello Uwe I'm from Munich, so excuse my bumpy English. My 24 Lux is an early one, according to the serial number from 2010. I bought it used in 2016. As I noticed at some point in the pictures, my lens was decentered. Very sharp on one edge of the picture, somewhat sharp in the middle, blurred on the other edge of the picture. After a service in Wetzlar it is right. Two Pictures with another Lightsource. First f8, second f1,4. best regards Axel Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members!
