The Planar is not more aggressive than some modern Leica lenses to be honest, with the added benefit of little flare at a reasonable price. The Planar has just a bit of focus shift, but Summicron v4 and v5 are hardly better in that. The Planar is a great lens definitely so when i need a sharp 50 i tend to bring it instead of a Summicron 50/2 apo. Only con (or pro) is the Zeiss look but it is a matter of taste. Not the genius of a Summicron v1 or v2 for sure but it is a matter of taste too, some people don't like their lower contrast which is rather an advantage for tweakings in PP to me. YMMV.

It’s my favorite 50mm so definitely feel it can be your only lens : ) Here’s some shots I took today with it, at f2 on the M10P

One more. Quite sharp and beautiful out of focus areas. Plus a pleasure to use, perfect focus throw and light.

I'm curious to know if anyone uses a Summicron 50mm V2 or rigid as their main lens. If so, what features of the lens and its images keeps you using it rather than swapping it for something more recent.

I know the DR has the same formula and so it would be nice to know if someone specifically uses the Rigid instead of the DR or vice versa.

I've seen the pictures on the forum of which there are many so this isn't a specific request for images :). Thanks.

I do…📷

I missed some interesting posts here due to coronary surgery in 2023 but to answer some questions, the Summicron 50/2 DR is not recommended by Leica but works fine on the M11 if you mount it at the infinity position. Its main merit appears in LV mode in that you don't need the goggles of the lens for closeups. One can focus from 0.5m to infinity without the goggles this way, you just have to press the bearing ball of the lens to access the close range below 1m. Great lens indeed, my favorite 50/2 on the M11. It is not compatible with the M240 though.
