If I select profile 1 and turn off the camera, it is still at profile 1 when I turn it on.

You must be doing something different.

That's pretty much it...  I select the profile i usually use. I use the camera (don't make changes that will unselect the profile, such as ISO changes). Turn off the camera, then turn back on and the default profile is selected.

It is usually depending on what you save in the profile. I minimal change can kick you off profile one.

maybe you selected too many options.

But even if you don't see Profile 1 it still does not reset the setting, it is still in the setting plus the change you have done.

I have the same issue. I do sometimes change the ISO but would hope it would stay in profile one with changed ISO. I should be able to power the camera off and rely it remains on profile one with its preset ISO settings. Instead it reverts to default.

Did you import your profiles from the SD card after you installed the FW update?

yes i did. Not sure if others have the same issue, but this is something I have been chasing around for a while.

it’s a bug for many SL2/S users that we’ve reported to Leica on many occasions i.e. select a profile (say number 4) shoot and then switch off. Upon switching the camera on again it shows that you’re in the default profile although actual your settings are still in 4. The problem being you don’t always remember where you let off so you have to select again!!

I have a feeling that low light / back light AF performance got worse after this update. anyone else got this impression?

Almizilero maybe it's lenses are you using? I've not had my Silver SL2 for that long but after Firmware 5.2.0 the low light AF has been fine. In the two photos below I was using AFS-Field with the Leica SL 24-70 wide open @ f/2.8. Focus point on the Angkor temple was the temple top: 56mm, 1/30 second, ISO 1600. Focus point on the couple was the woman's face: 50mm, 1/6 second, ISO 1600.

I'm using the same lenses as before, Sigma 35/1.2 and SL 90/2. The situations were a bit darker than what your pictures look like, but nothing I didn't shoot before. The most problems occured with a backlight situation, shooting a person against the sunset. It was really hard to get focus with AF, I had to switch to MF after a while. Did such shoots a couple of times, never had this much problems before (that's why I thought it might be the update).

Ah yes my low light photos are different that your backlit circumstances. The only similar (but different) subject I've taken with strong backlight since the firmware update is this: Again with the Leica SL 24-70, at 24mm, f/7.1, 1/800 second, ISO 100. I recall the focus was snappy using AFS-Field.

Preparing to update my (new-to-me) SL2 to 5.2. Do I need to export my user profiles to an SD card separately from the update and reimport them afterwards ? On p. 191 of the manual it says that a prompt to save user profiles to the SD card being used for the update precedes the update… does this do the same thing? That is, will the update incorporate migrating the user profile/s or should I export/import them separately?

Following the prompt to export your existing profiles to the card with the new firmware is all you need to do. But I don't recall a prompt to import the profiles once the new firmware is installed, so don't forget to do that.
