SL m24-70 mm as a travel lens

I’m   tempted to take the 24-105 over my 24-70 for that extra reach as I will leave the 70-300 at home on a general holiday along with the 14-28

Leaves me with Q2 and 24-105 plus maybe a small prime

20-60 and 85 a possibility too

My answer was mainly about just being a tourist.  OP didn't mention going on a photography-based trip.  In that case, yes, you would need more/different gear.

OP hasn’t returned in 3 weeks.  He also last asked in May about a lens for travel, and never returned to the thread.

Panasonic published their new lens roadmap.

There's a standard zoom listed. I suppose the options are smaller than the 24-70, so possibly a 28-70 f/2.8 or a 24-70 f/4.

Take the SL2 + 24-90 for everyday casual shooting and take the Q2 for the more relaxed or adventurous shooting 

I have a similar decision to make, wondering if I should carry both my 24-90 and the 90-280 for travel to Japan and India. Will the 90-280 be an overkill, considering its weight?

Just wondering, don't we buy the Leica for its lenses? The dilemma with SL system is that its SL lenses are unwieldy. Wish they had produced M-size lenses for the SL

Nothing stopping you from using M lenses on the SL. SL lenses aren’t necessarily the best choice for all situations, good to have additional options from Panasonic, Sigma and others.

That’s a good point, and one that I needed to overcome. I avoided the SL for years because the APO primes (amazing as they are) and the 24-90 zoom make the system too large and hefty for me. I fully accept that this isn’t the case for other SL users and the APO lenses’ quality is undeniable - and I also asked myself your question ‘surely I’d want to use Leica glass with it?”
I have a couple of Leica M lenses which adapt beautifully to the SL and although I bought my SL2-S with the 24-70 zoom, because the deal is such a good one, my main enjoyment from the SL now comes from adapting the M lenses and, I have to admit, from using the lovely, tactile, Sigma DG DN i-Contemporary lenses. The 24-70 is a cracking travel lens, no doubt about it, but it’s still on the edge of being as cumbersome as I (personally) want to go. I have taken a few weddings with it though, and it’s a very good performer indeed.
We each buy into a system for different reasons but I wouldn’t have become an SL user without the ability to adapt M lenses, or discovering those Sigmas whose performance is outstanding - they are very capable. I took a wedding in New York for a British couple who wanted the whole cityscape and subway included as the backdrops and the Sigma 35f2 DG DN was all I really needed on the SL2-s. 
I cannot knock the 24-70 - it’s a really good lens - but I’ve come to realise that the SL system is so versatile that it’s no longer a sin to use it without Leica lenses when there are genuinely more manageable alternatives (perhaps in a cost, ergonomic and practical sense), particularly for my use. I think Leica demonstrates this itself through the L-Mount Alliance and, as far as I’m concerned, they’ve certainly sold one more body than they otherwise would’ve done as a result.

I chose Leica cl, q and sl2s because they are a joy to use, feeling natural in my hands with an instinctively understandable control system 

love the lenses too but have absolutely no problem using anything that fits

Generally I prefer Leica lenses. At the same time the L mount partners also make some fabulous glass and they shouldn't be ignored. Also if you want wider than 16mm or longer than 400mm then they're your only options.

If Leica made a 20-xx lens or an f4 short tele zoom I'd absolutely consider them. At the same time I don't discount lenses that aren't made by the red dot company. One of the main strengths of the L mount alliance is the wide selection of compatible cameras and lenses. An S5II makes an incredible backup to a SL2-S for a fraction of the cost and has better AF and video functionality. The SIgma 14-24 easily rivals the SL16-35 and there's simply no Leica alternative to the Panny 20-60. Only Sony and Olympus have a rival to that lens. Canon and Nikon have nothing close. We're lucky to have it in L mount.

And I don't find the Leica glass unwieldy, personally. I knew what I was getting when I bought into the system. No one makes 24x36 AF lenses in an M size. I have my toe dipped in all the major brands and while some of it can be smaller there are always compromises and none of it is small enough to make a massive difference to a bag of gear.
