I have not had issue with inadvertently being in "Video" mode as mentioned in this topic.  My shooting mode is always Aperture priority and I always press the Menu button prior to taking an image.  It confirms all the settings of the camera at that time including Photo/Video.  For me this is one of the best features of the LCD.

The solution described on the previous page works fine for me. The screen still works in playback mode, and if I need to look at it otherwise, I just angle it slightly.

I would still prefer it if Leica would change the firmware such that the L<-->R swipe can be turned off.

I was having the same problem and it was driving me crazy until I realized the custom button two was set to switch between photo and video. It's really easy to hit by mistake. Once I switched it to something else, it stopped happening.

Hasn't stopped it happening for me, three or four times it happened on the street again today.  If I cannot find a fix that works, I'll be sending it back.  It's ridiculous.

How do you shoot, and what have you tried? Curious to know as I’ve not had this problem with my Q3 or my CL or my previous Q2.

Use EVF extended mode. I never had an accidental switch to video. What do you do to switch accidentally?

So I have to forgo the use of an LCD screen just to stay in camera mode! I like to use the screen, I bought it to use the flip down screen.    The only thing that can be causing it is that somehow it interprets some body contact as a swipe to video.  I'm discovering that we can't turn this feature off.  So annoying.

When you flip down the screen, the LCD turns on automatically, even in EVF extended mode. You can also program a button to switch between EVF extended and Auto mode.

Having few Fn buttons on this camera, it's a shame to waste one of them for a dummy function like this that can be fixed via software (yes, fixed, this is an objective stupid UX behavior and not a subjective thing). As I told in a comment before, I use this camera all days for my documentary, portrait and wedding work and this thing happens continuously to me and I miss a lot of important shots.

These are valid points, though I have no issues as I seldom shoot with an LCD unless I have to tilt it.

Note that Q3 has one more function button than Q2. I use one for LPC and one is spare that I may use for digital zoom.

I don’t have a Q3, just a Q2, but I’m curious about this problem. Mine is set to Extended EVF (Display Settings), where the LCD is only active when pressing Play or Menu - swiping to switch from Photo to Video can’t happen unless one of those functions are active.

Do the Q3 menu options work differently or are you all keeping the rear screen active permanently? What am I missing?

I guess that is why I have never experienced this problem, in that I use the Extended EVF most all the time.

I inadvertently started video mode a couple of times. Maybe by swiping the LCD? Is there a way to disable that function so that video  mode can be started only from the menu?

It could be function button #2 (the one on the right) which is default programmed to switch modes. When you touch it accidentally with yr thumb the video mode switches on. I’ve reprogrammed it.

I am having the same problem with the Q3 and only since updating to firmware 2.0.5.  I always work in Extended EVF mode.  Since the update, I was unexpectedly finding the Q3 in video mode from time to time.  After some experimentation, I found that the slightest left-swipe touch on the blank inactive LCD  was causing it to switch to video.  Moreover, the blank inactive LCD didn't respond to a right-swipe to switch back to photo.

The update also screwed up the second (rightmost) function button, even though I saved and re-imported my profiles during the firmware update.  I have it set to AE-L in favourites.  Yet pressing function 2 was switching on the video even though it is not one of the favourites set for that button.  I solved that my re-doing my list of favourites, but I am still stuck with the rogue video switching from touching the blank inactive LCD.

I cannot replicate the switch to video in EVF Extended mode with the LCD fully folded in. Can you replicate it reliably?

Yes, without fail, both in Extended EVF and EVF modes, and only since the firmware upgrade to 2.0.5

OK, I have found the bug.    Menu 1>Focusing has a setting "Touch AF in EVF".   One of the options is "AF Quick Setting only".  This was introduced to allow the focus point to be reset to the centre by double-tapping the (notionally inactive) LCD screen when in Extended EVF mode.   This has worked fine for me in the past - a double tap on the LCD while looking through the viewfinder and the focus point immediately jumps to the centre.

Clearly,  with the option "Menu 1>Focusing>Touch AF in EVF>AF Quick Setting only", the LCD is active in Extended EVF mode,  and with the new firmware it is now (incorrectly) reacting to a left-swipe by switching to Video.  It doesn't respond to a right-swipe though, to revert back to Photo.

The remedy is to set "Menu 1>Focusing>Touch AF in EVF>Off".  Then there is no accidental switch to Video, at the expense of losing the ability to reset a wandering focus point.

Unwanted video issue:  Interesting question.   I attended the Leica Akademie event on the Q3 yesterday in Washington DC [excellently done, by the way, and recommended.]  This very topic came up in discussion -- those commenting here should not feel "alone."  I asked the instructor "[I]s there a way to disable video mode so these "accidents" don't happen?"  Answer [I think this accurate verbatim]:  "No, not at this time."

Perhaps a groundswell of direct communications with Leica will persuade Leica to "tune up" their firmware a bit?

Thank you for investigating the issue! 👏

Have you filed a bug with Leica?

Thank you.  Good question!  I have looked online but can't find a link for filing a bug.  Your help would be appreciated.

One way is probably via the Fotos app, Cogwheel> Feature Requests.

I send bug reports to TechnicalInfo@leicacamerausa.com. Others have been filing bugs via info@leica-camera.com.

Does anyone know any better way?
