davidfung Posted August 5, 2023 Share #1 Posted August 5, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just went into an Leica store and heard that the SL Summilux 50mm is being discontinued? Time to grab one before it’s gone? Any veracity to this news?

Ivar B Posted August 5, 2023 Share #2 Posted August 5, 2023 I don`t know, but hard to believe that this is true. Not difficult to find the lens used through, heavily discounted.

Sohail Posted August 5, 2023 Share #4 Posted August 5, 2023 Fantastic lens! Magical. It would be crazy to discontinue.

Cronilux Posted February 6 Share #7 Posted February 6 Advertisement (gone after registration) Would not surprise me. It´s slow. I could bet they will release an updated version with better performance.

Leslie22 Posted February 7 Share #11 Posted February 7 The 50 LUX SL is a monster ... big & heavy .... drives me crazy BUT I love it. What a magical lens. After every trip I take , I say (to myself) thank goodness I took the Lux. If it has been discontinued it's a shame.
helged Posted February 7 Share #12 Posted February 7 Personally and image wise, SL50Lux is on top. Glad I have it. Optically, SL APOs are better. Plus smaller, lighter, faster focusing, etc. Should I nevertheless rank the L-mount lenses I have experience with (and for my type of shooting, not talking about optical perfection), the rank is SL50Lux on top, followed by SL35-APO and SL21-APO. I would say that there definitely is a place for SL50-Lux. If it is discontinued, a new version with faster focus, possibly smaller/less heavy, may come.

No doubt they can make it faster-focusing and smaller in 2025.
jpark114 Posted February 7 Share #14 Posted February 7 I'd be really disappointed if a new 50 lux-sl, if ever comes out, is a rebranded sigma 50mm f1.2. I don't know, but 50mm is such a important and standard focal length that the lux version of it atleast should be entirely Leica made. Hope for improved 2nd gen Lux-sl with faster af motors & optics from Leica 1

JohnathanLovm Posted February 8 Share #16 Posted February 8 Maybe it’s about time for new version of Sigma Summilux /Noctilux SL with E82 housing.

Well I do have Leica M Lens including 50mm Summilux Asph. As for SL, I do welcome rebranded lens, I actually own 35 & 50 non apo summicron-sl already. My 50 was a part of SL2 package deal, and 35 I got for 1300 from my friend as anew. They both offer smaller sized lens in leica quality lens body with weather sealing capability, but I can't stop thinking I still overpaid even with the deals. Generally, I wouldn't care if Leica keeps adding rebranded as long as Leica keeps offering its own developed optics. I don't want to see Leica's own offering replaced by rebranded. I hope @SJH's right. Perhaps Leica will introduce 50mm Noctilux-SL while replacing their own Lux with rebranded.

A true Noctilux must have an aperture wider than f1.4. When you look at the size of both the f0.95 M 50mm and f1.25 M 75mm Noctilux, with no auto-focus mechanism, it seems inconceivable that Leica could build a comparable SL version with auto-focus. Anyone who really wants to use Noctilux glass on the SL can just choose the M version because manual focussing is really not that difficult with such a superb EVF. Maybe an updated 50mm SL Summilux is on the drawing board - I suppose it depends on perceived demand - but the 21mm APO took ages and Leica seems to be more attracted to cheaper products at present. Non APO lenses for the SL, a parts bin M11 special edition variant and the new Lux iPhone attachment. They have also discontinued the f1.5 M 90mm Summilux, another very expensive lens that probably wasn't selling.

Well all three major camera brands do offer their top quality lens in 50mm F/1.2, so I don't see why Leica cannot do it. Perhaps 50.4 lux with rebranded to keep its size and weight less, while going big for Noctilux 1.2? I'm not sure about 0.95. Nikon's 58mm F/0.95, manual focus, is a beast to say the least. F 1.2 should be doable in fairly manageable sized way. Of course, I'd prefer to see 50mm Lux-SL improved instead of rebranded, but it's fun to speculate...
