davidmknoble Posted August 5, 2023 Share #1 Posted August 5, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just curious why the titanium series, like the titanium lenses seem less expensive than the chrome versions? It seems that both are brass. I am wondering if people just don’t like the color, so it has a lower priced market. Looking for thoughts from those that considered the series or have it. What do you think about it?

grahamc Posted August 5, 2023 Share #2 Posted August 5, 2023 (edited) I love particularly the 35:1.4v2 in brass/titanium. Curiously it’s the sharpest copy of that lens I have had and doesn’t suffer focus shift (I have wondered if the brass allows tighter tolerances but I have no idea). The Titan version of that particular lens is the only one with brass. And the 50:1.4v3 is one of the nicest lenses I’ve seen - IMO it’s even nicer than the black paint one I also own. I have the M6 TTL in Titanium and love that too. I wasn’t really aware that titanium lenses are cheaper or less desirable (the Titan 35:1.4v2 is more expensive than standard black) but some may see them as having limited potential to match with bodies. But they look great on black bodies and also really good on safari green Edited August 5, 2023 by grahamc
250swb Posted August 5, 2023 Share #3 Posted August 5, 2023 I've seen some ugly wear on titanium bodies and I'm not sure all are brass, a friend had a camera with the typical M6 zinc bubbling. As an option to silver or black a good one can look very pretty and I wouldn't have any hesitation if one came along at the right price.
grahamc Posted August 5, 2023 Share #4 Posted August 5, 2023 (edited) There is healthy debate online whether the M6 classic titanium plated cameras are brass top-plates or not. What is not debated it the TTL version (limited to 1000 and released in the same year Leica was plating the various BP "Millennium" brass versions) are brass topped. Mine is wearing well and has heavy use - I struggle to find scratches on it but there are some hairlines here and there. Like a silver chrome camera they are hard-wearing durable but it won't brass though, of course . On a side note what I also really like about the TTL is it came with a brown buffalo leather cover, which shows a really nice aged patina now Edited August 5, 2023 by grahamc
a.noctilux Posted August 5, 2023 Share #5 Posted August 5, 2023 M6 Classic titanium coated which looks distinctive has nothing more than regular. I was proud owner of one M6 and I had four lenses in titanium coated, 3 x 35mm and one 50mm. The one lens I regret selling with the M6 Ti as combo to one young photographer, pre-asph Summilux-M 35mm. The 35mm Summilux-M asph sold "replaced" by lighter plain black model ...415g/306g Still keep the 50mm though. have a look in this thread
Bronco McBeast Posted August 5, 2023 Share #6 Posted August 5, 2023 The thing is, the ONLY 35mm summilux pre-asph in BRASS is the Titanium version, and it’s a thinf of beauty. Even the Mount is different, not the usual stainless steel. It is heavy, and luxurious to the touch. Quite exclusive. I really like mine.
Guest Posted August 6, 2023 Share #7 Posted August 6, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yeah, I can only concur. I got the 35mm Summilux pre-asph v2 titan just before summer holiday. Shot my holiday trip exclusively on that lens and M10M. Love it! Handling, build and design is for sure nicer than the 35Lux “Steel rim” re-issue, which I also have. Although I do like that lens too. - Mads
