anitasanger Posted July 28, 2023 Share #1 Posted July 28, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) With the anniversary year coming up, I was wondering if there might be any credence to waiting on purchasing an Mp? No safe queens here. It'll be a lifetime camera, but, if waiting a few months might give me the opportunity to snag a (more) special model, I think it might be prudent to wait. In the past I've had an m6 TTL, moved up to an Mp black paint, had to sell it for financial reasons when my kid was born premature, and now I'm in a m3 SS with a 1.5 Summarit. Love it, but miss having a built in meter. I'll probably carry it and the Mp around at times. Likely going with a new Summilux 50 and a steel rim 35mm reissue. Anyway, I just wanted to bounce this off the collective for any thoughts. Thanks.

Kl@usW. Posted July 28, 2023 Share #2 Posted July 28, 2023 An MP with a Summilux 50 is a timeless combo-you can't go wrong with that. Waiting for that extra model...no, go for it now. I have two MPs and I know the agony of sitting on the fence. But I have the feeling that Leica right now are busy with the aftermath of the M6 new, so I wouldn't expect a special model any time soon. And show us some pictures !

The first MP’s were built in 2002 ready for delivery in 2003, and while ‘anniversary’ can be interpreted in many ways essentially you’ve missed it unless you mean waiting for 25 years? Far better to hunt down a 2002 MP starting with a low ‘28’ serial number. Edited July 28, 2023 by 250swb
anitasanger Posted July 28, 2023 Author Share #4 Posted July 28, 2023 Thank you for all the comments, guys. Could you expound on the superiority of the early MPs? It seems like I recall some differences. Metal button battery cap, perhaps? Or was it a better-made ISO dial? thanks.
250swb Posted July 28, 2023 Share #5 Posted July 28, 2023 The MP comes with two battery caps, one with a coin slot or one without. The M6 style ISO dial on early MP’s is an identifier, but it still works the same way as any other.
69xchange Posted July 28, 2023 Share #6 Posted July 28, 2023 Earlier MP’s have sharkskin leatherette (up until late 2019). And even earlier such as early 2003 MP’s had M6 dial on the back as stated above, perforated (glass?) pressure plate and a thicker “Leica” top plate logo. Also those earlier models had issues with dust getting into the viewfinder.
anitasanger Posted July 28, 2023 Author Share #7 Posted July 28, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'll probably just stick with a new boy. Chrome. I love the contest of a bi-colour camera. Don't even mind black lenses on chrome MPs.
BradS Posted July 28, 2023 Share #8 Posted July 28, 2023 I wouldn't wait. Go for it and enjoy.
mediumformula Posted July 28, 2023 Share #9 Posted July 28, 2023 I would get it now. Also, I'd recommend getting a used version 1 50 Summilux Asph instead of the new one since you won't be able to utilize the close focus on a film M and the older one is lighter weight and a bit smaller in width. (Unless you are also using it for digital) The 50 Lux on an MP is one of my favorite combos.
anitasanger Posted July 29, 2023 Author Share #10 Posted July 29, 2023 Very nice advice. Thank you!
Leica Filmmatic Posted July 29, 2023 Share #11 Posted July 29, 2023 I got my MP a couple of months ago and I wish I was able to get one earlier. Jump in as soon as you can!
RayD28 Posted July 29, 2023 Share #12 Posted July 29, 2023 If an anniversary model was available, it would probably be at a premium ($1,000?) vs a regular new model. I wouldn't wait if it were me.
Anbaric Posted July 29, 2023 Share #13 Posted July 29, 2023 Nobody should buy any cameras until 2025, when they will surely have anniversary models for the Leica Centenary (not to be confused with the Oskar Barnack Prototype Centenary a decade ago or the Leica 0-Series Centenary this year or the Leica Rangefinder Centenary in 2032, or of course the Leica M Centenary in 2054). 🙂 1
Warton Posted July 29, 2023 Share #14 Posted July 29, 2023 how can you be sure there would be an anniversary special edition of your like?
madNbad Posted July 29, 2023 Share #15 Posted July 29, 2023 Don't wait. The prices will probably increase again. Buy the camera you want and enjoy it.
Huss Posted July 29, 2023 Share #16 Posted July 29, 2023 Just buy it now but check to make sure it doesn’t scratch film. MP is a sweet camera.
