250swb Posted July 20, 2023 Share #22 Posted July 20, 2023 The only cable release I have that fits absolutely everything I have, all my Leica's from M2 to MP and MP, medium format, vintage cameras and shutters etc. is an old Gitzo cable release with a very short fine thread. Any other cable release that works has to be stored with the camera so as not to separate them. So it's not just a problem with soft releases. wattsy Posted July 20, 2023 Share #24 Posted July 20, 2023 (edited) Some cable releases have a tapered thread so they work with a range of thread sizes (obviously within a reasonable limit). I have a Leica branded cable release that I've had for 20 years and it has worked fine with everything from M6TTL to M-A via the various digital Ms I've owned too. Marc B-C Posted July 20, 2023 Share #26 Posted July 20, 2023 I used to have a soft release on my Fuji X100f, however, it became slightly pressed when in the camera bag. This was causing battery drain (even thought the camera was switched off. Once I removed it, there was no issue. Because on those meter-less Ms, the shutter release does not have the half-stop mechanism, which makes it quite easy to trigger accidentally. I had times triggering the shutter when I carried my M4 across my body and squatted down, or when I lifted the straps from my shoulder and transferred it to the front, it hit my bag and fired. Using the finger knuckle to squeeze into the shutter release collar is a great way to fire the shutter with minimum vibrations. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

If the shutter release button has a screw thread in the middle (as does the M7) it is there to take either a cable release which is basically a 'plunger' or a soft release which is basically a spacer. Indeed the M7 manual states this, my underlining "Shutter release Three-step: Power – Metering memory-lock (for aperture priority mode) – Release. Integrated standard thread for cable release."
