msadat Posted November 11, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted November 11, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) why is it that this lens gets no respect in the leica line up, and they always go way cheap on ebay. i have one that have not used in a long time since i got my dmr (when it first came out) and i tried it yesterday. the images were sharp, good colors and a lightweight lens to carry around. Â what do you guys think about this lens?
Advertisement Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 Hi msadat, Take a look here leica 28-70mm R lens, why no respect. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
goodbokeh Posted November 12, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted November 12, 2007 I think the main reason is that it is an old Sigma design and has quite a bit of distortion at the wide end. If you like it then don't worry about its pedigree. Leica must have thought it was a good design or they would not have contracted for its manufacture in the first place. fernando_b Posted November 12, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted November 12, 2007 >> the images were sharp, good colors and a lightweight lens to carry around So this is important: if it works fine with DMR it is a good lens. Don't worry about what other guys think about it. Enjoy your lens! Fernando.
stuny Posted November 12, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted November 12, 2007 Mehrdad - Â Part of the reason for the low parices on eBay is the release a few years ago of the 28-90, at which time many dealers bundled the 28-70 along with R8s and R9s to clear their shelves. I've always had very good experiences with my 28-70, both before and after getting my DMR.
msadat Posted November 12, 2007 Author Share #5 Â Posted November 12, 2007 is the 28-70 a discontinued lens?
jlancasterd Posted November 12, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted November 12, 2007 is the 28-70 a discontinued lens? Â Yes - it doesn't appear in the current list of 'R" lenses on the Leica website
phlogiston1 Posted November 12, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted November 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I agree, good colour, good contrast, very useful lens. Later models have better lens hood and I think are a little better.

lct Posted November 13, 2007 Share #13 Â Posted November 13, 2007 Would be to use it with film sorry. Any full frame pic at 28mm folks?
phlogiston1 Posted November 13, 2007 Share #14 Â Posted November 13, 2007 Look, I said don't get hung up about those things. If you test that lens, any lens you will find faults to a greater or lesser degree. I have probably taken more pics with that zoom than any other Leica lens I own and I have never been disappointed with the real life images it produced. Hey!, when I do critical work I use a prime! I have owned both models of the 28-70. I am a photographer not a perfectionist. Robin.
lct Posted November 13, 2007 Share #15 Â Posted November 13, 2007 What i'm asking here is how's vignetting and distortion at 28mm. Good? Bad? Average? What's your opinion as a photographer?
stuny Posted November 13, 2007 Share #16 Â Posted November 13, 2007 LCT - Â When my R8 was film only I used this lens about 65-75% of the time, and then frequently (especially indoors) at 28MM. I can't recall ever having noticeable vignetting, and only on occasion would I notice barrel distortion (also present to about the same degree on the 28-90 at 28MM), and then only in verticals with strong vertical lines near the edges. I got that camera and lens in December 1999, and didn't do any digital (via a D2) until April 2004. Check our site for photos between those dates. Perhaps the Egypt & Jordan set would be the best for you to evaluate with that regard, but remember I am famous for poor scanning.

I've had two of these lenses - the early Japanese (Sigma-assembled) version which gave me mechanical trouble (the stop-down linkage came apart) and the later Solms-assembled version, which is much more mechanically robust and handles better.  Both types distorted noticeably at 28mm with barrel distortion when used for full-frame. This is less noticeable using the DMR, but I still got colour fringes in the corners.  I now have the 28-90 asph which is a much improved design - although it is also much heavier and more expensive
