I can understand that photography is such an important part of their life that there's no issue for many photographers in carrying heavy gear. Sometimes, this is also the right choice for me. But many times it is not and I've seen over the years that the lighter camera wins providing that it's nice to use and produces good results. So the SL2 might be well balanced, but after a day on my feet the aches and pains of a heavy camera are simply unwelcome. I'm hoping Leica will eventually have a business case for a lighter camera that can take (via adaptors) an M lens.

The bloom came a bit off the rose for me when I realized that my 500 dollar 24mm Sigma lens

Is that the f2 Sigma? I've also been considering it when I don't want to lug around the 16-35 monster.

really? It's pretty much twice the weight

M11 weight: 530g

SL2: 920g + 70g for the L-M adapter = 990g

I use M10's - which are slightly heavier I guess, at 660 g. I mean, ok, yes, it's a little heavier, but it's not perceptively heavier in a shoulder bag on a long walk, or even strapped around my shoulder for a long period of time. It's a little bulkier because of the viewfinder and the grip - which makes it slightly less travel friendly. But if one is going to have a single camera in a bag - or at least if I'm going to - I find there is no practical difference when it comes to transport. I just like the M viewfinder and experience more.

Heavy! 460g is my one rep max on a bench press 😄

Joking aside, my go-to camera these days is the SL2 plus the 1kg+ 50 Lux SL. I'm no spring chicken but you get used to it. It's the least of my concerns.

Just watched a video of Koudelka on YouTube with three medium format digital bodies over his shoulder photographing the Jerusalem wall (including that custom panorama Leica S). He was like 78 years old doing this. The complaints about the weight of the SL weight I will never understand. I shoot mine for 8 hours at a time and I don't even think about it.

I'd be thinking about the M11 freezing every time I used it a lot more than 400 grams.

Remember mobile phones from a few years ago?
would anybody buy or carry one of these things today?
That’s how it sounds when people say “at my time I used to carry 40kg of gear walking backwards uphill. On one leg.”

Technology change. Expectations change. The market also change with it.

For my money, this thing looks way cooler than any modern smartphone. Gordon Gekko for the win!

Koudelka - Fuji GX 617 for the win.  What a great camera with the removable lenses.  I’ve been shooting my hassy x2d in xpan mode 1:2.7 aspect ratio.  I just see that way.  It works with this crop around 50mp.  Beats me having to shoot a tech cam with a digital back and stitch.  I think the x2d and Leica is a great combo.

I saw a video on the q2 monochrom last night.  Also an amazing camera….

Personally I'll carry what I need to, to get the shot. But I'd consider my self quite mad to carry more than I needed to. If Leica want to make the SL3 lighter, I won't say no. Currently my X2D and three lenses is lighter than my SL2 and three Summicron APO's. Guess which one I'm likely to prefer?

The SL2 might be all the camera I need but it's not all I want. Most of the time I don't need more than an M9 but I'm not going back.... I shot 4x5 and RB67's as well. No thanks.

I’m on holidays and walk everyday about 15/20 km photographing stuff.
The difference between a SL plus apo and a M or Q in weight is really noticeable, especially after some hours walking.

So based on this, I decided to change my setup: the SL will be with zooms (wide plus tele, not standard) where the primes will be for the M. No need to have double FL’s especially MF is quick enough for me.

That said, still doubting about the Q vs the 907x for waistlevel usage.

The SL is all one need, but so is a M or Q for many people.

For me, it is all about making reasonable choices on this front. I often work within walking distance of my car, or in my studio, so in that context nearly all cameras are weightless. I also shoot 4x5 and 8x10, and without a car, mule or assistant, doing 8x10 is not really something that is practical to carry around all day. If I plan to go on a hike, I would probably just carry the SL2 and 50mm, and maybe the Sigma 24mm 3.5 and 90mm or 135mm M lens on M to L adapter. If I am looking for a camera to carry day to day with me all the time, it is the Ricoh GRIIIx, which is the most professional truly compact camera I am aware of. At the end of the day I am an art photographer not an event photographer, so it is better for me to just pare down the kit. I think the Leica and Ricoh pair very well this way. In the analog world, for hikes I almost always use the Mamiya 7II or a Konica Hexar. Both are very light for what they can provide.

Personally, when I used M's, I was not a fan of the haptics, and consequently, I used a grip and an EVF... I felt that this combination matched the SL's (At the time) ease of use. Of course, one can remove the additional items.

M11 - Black 530g/ Chrome 640g with battery
Grip - 87g
EVF - 93g
Thumbsplus - 27g

Total  = 737g Black/ 847g Chrome

SL2 = 920 g with battery + Adapter 70g = 990g

Still a significant difference, but perhaps, not as much as we think.

Another reason for Leica to release a EVF M and save 93g 😄

Actually the savings would be the weight difference between the built-in EVF and the RF/VF (if heavier), assuming all else equal.

If Leica added IBIS and weather sealing, etc to it, it would begin to approach an SL.
