A lot of sellers say that this is a limited edition of 1000 units only. Is this true? I couldn't find anything to confirm this in any of the official Leica announcements. I got a good deal on one of these beauties, but I'm hesitant with the prices of used SL2 / SL2-S crashing to unknown depth at the moment. Not that I'm buying to sell, but it breaks my heart that my SL2-S is now worth less than half what I paid for it only a year ago. Very un-Leica price development. Maybe this limited edition will be a bit more stable, if it's true.

Leica SL cameras are the camera equivalent of Porsche Taycan cars. There is just a large amount of oversupply slashing their value.
The value of the silver version will stay higher, but still going to move together with the black versions, if those go further down, it will go with it.
People generally tend to look for the SL2-S more, because of quicker operation, better ISO and video features.

Leica camera bodies tend to hold their value over time (relative to other systems), but that doesn't mean they don't have highs and lows as supply and demand fluctuate. I expect some big fluctuations in the next few months as the SL3 is rolled-out. Supply might go up if many current SL2 owners trade-in, or it may go down if the new body brings-in buyers from other systems.

Almizilero, when I researched purchasing my silver SL2 last spring I remember seeing this same 1000 unit concern expressed. Given my research I believe the silver model is limited to 1000 but why not call or email Leica direct and ask. BTW, with the SL3 being introduced next month the SL2 is now clearly out of production so the limited production number is more likely just because of that.

I'm vacationing in France this March. I also have Sonys (A1 & A7R5) and a Fuji (100S) but I'm taking my silver SL2 because of the haptics and the type of photography I will be doing. The low light IQ of the SL2's 47 MP sensor is within 1/2 stop of my Sony's 50 & 60MP sensors, I like the Raw color files more and there are less issues with backlit sensor flare cause by the PDAF pixels of the Sonys & Fuji. Because I value the high MP count of these sensors I try to limit the ISO of my cameras to 1600 and 3200 in extremes.

My experience is that silver cameras (with smaller primes) make people less wary and sometimes can even produce a smile. Maybe they think it's a film camera and/or I'm a codger 😉 It's sad but even cell phones nowadays get people suspicious.

So, if you have a good price being offered for a silver SL2 I would would recommend you go for it. BTW, you know the SL3 will likely have the inevitable shake down cruise of bugs just like the M11 and Q3 have had. My silver SL2 has been solid as a rock.

has anyone numbers how many SL and M bodies are sold in total for each year? My impression is that M is sold in much larger quantities.

Oh dear, I have a Porsche Taycan and a Leica.  Of course, you only feel the pain when selling and I will keep both.

Digressing slightly, the problem with cars is that silly PCP credit deals enable people to buy something when they couldn't even afford the HP payments.  I always buy new, always pay cash, only spend what I can afford, and always have a healthy trade-in to offset the cost of my next purchase.

Back on topic . . . my Leica is the M10R Black Paint and Leica Mayfair have one on offer at GBP 11,800 so that model is bucking the trend.  But I'm still not selling 😃

New: Leica SL2 in Silver

Now as a Design Variant with a Classic Look – also available in two attractive kits together with a lens

Wetzlar, 15th June 2023. Leica cameras have always remained true to their line. The design follows the function and is characterised by minimalist features concentrating on the essentials. It speaks an unmistakable language with a special emphasis on visual and haptic value. This unique look is also reflected in the new product variant of the Leica SL2 in silver. Furthermore, it is reminiscent of the typical design of the popular silver Leica M and Leica R camera classics.

With the SL2 in silver, Leica Camera AG complies with the wish of its customers and once again demonstrates a sustained exchange with the very people who use Leica products. The design variant presents itself with a silver anodised top plate and base plate. Its elegant black leather covering is identical to the Leica M11 and rounds off the classic look. Visually, the silver Leica SL2 is particularly appealing in combination with the M-Adapter L and the legendary, compact M lenses.

The technical specifications of the silver Leica SL2 are the same as those of the existing series model in black. Extremely intuitive, easy and comfortable to use, it produces photographs and videos of impressive image quality thanks to its powerful 47 MP CMOS sensor. Its high dynamic range and a sensitivity range of up to ISO 50,000 deliver outstanding pictures in all lighting conditions. These can be triggered remotely via the Leica FOTOS app and transferred via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Many other functions ensure a seamless workflow and allow the Leica SL2 to be conveniently integrated into professional setups.

The Leica SL2 in silver will be available globally at all Leica Stores, the Leica Online Store and authorised dealers starting now. The retail price will be €7,100.00 including VAT.

In addition, Leica is offering two kits with an attractive price advantage to match the new design variant. The silver Leica SL2 is available in a kit together with the versatile Vario-Elmarit-SL 24- 70 f/2.8 ASPH. for €9,100.00. The second kit consists of the silver anodised design version and the classic Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH. including M-Adapter L and is available for €13,890.00. This also allows for the possibility of combining all M-Lenses ever produced with SL-Cameras and thus using their unmistakable look for photography and videography.

Titanium would be excellent …

I loved my M10R BP but sold it for the M11, then the M11P and M11M. No regrets though and that one in Mayfair has frankly been there for ages at that price ‘to try and make the point about BP’. Just pop in one day with your BP and ask them how much they’ll give you for it or at another dealer, ‘digital’ reality will quickly unfold :)

Like most manufactured goods, you'll get a large chunk of depreciation the moment your payment is accepted. Unlike most goods, a Leica M's trade value doesn't necessarily trend toward scrap value. Most models level-out after a decade, and some go up in value.

You can use this information in different ways. I tend to buy unexceptional models on the used market, because they offer the best value ("it's just a regular Summicron!"). Others look for rarities in the hope that they will increase in value.
