I am looking at the full size comparison shots Dennis posted above  - the Summicron vs the Brightin at f8 - and do not see what you are seeing.  At all.

Full enlargement, looking at the corners.

Edit - if you compare the last two pics - the Brightin vs the Elmarit - and check the bottom left corner, the Elmarit is much blurrier.

I made my comment based on the first two pics. The Brightin bottom left corner's trees and leaves are kind of swirling. The Elmarit sucks, too. However I think it is the fault of zone-focusing. For a scene that everything is at infinity distance, zone-focus according to the DOF scale is nonsense and means out of focus. Maybe that's why the expensive Elmarit doesn't show any distinct advantage to this plastic element feel toy.

What is plastic about it?  It is made of brass and glass.  Or is this one of those 'it's not Leica so I hate it' posts?

The optic performance makes it feel like made of brass for the shell and plastic for the optics. And you guess what, I hate the overrated overpriced Leica lens equally. I haven’t touched the Elmarit or Summicron 28, but upon the images shown here, I will add them to my lens blacklist.

So don’t get away from the topic. I spot the poor corner swirling while you claim it doesn’t exist. Let’s go on from here.

I see that on the examples from the Summicron and Elmarit too.  So let's go on from there.  Oh, never mind, they are already on your "black list"!

It’s fun that it seems you don’t like that term. Does that irritate your nerve? I don’t accept the IQ of this cheap black paint toy doesn’t mean I have to cover my eyes to say the Summicron and Elmarit are any better.

Dood, you be you and be mad at everything.  It's ok.  I'll enjoy this lens when I get it.  Alongside my Leica and other lenses. Including a seriously crappy Lomo Minitar 32!  Life's too short to get bent outta shape at something that no-one is asking you to buy.

I feel that we are living in a ‘golden era’ of photographic equipment; starting from the mirrorless cameras, brought back the use of many vintage lens in various mounts. Leica also benefited with its SL series and live view M cameras. The number of 3rd party M mount lens manufacturer is on a rise. To me, it means we have more choices and I believe it’s a good thing.
I was trying to share something new in this forum and I was hoping people could know more about this tiny lens before they make the purchase, if they have the need / want. No more and no less.
Let’s enjoy life !

Could be wrong, it’s at f/8, focused set at closest focusing distance .

Thanks for posting!  I’m not surprised that there is corner smear, but I have a feeling this lens will be better on film, as with the similar form Lomo Minitar.  I still think it looks fine on digital given what I think most people would be using this lens for -street snaps where no-one cares about how the corners look!

And I think people need to understand there will be technical trade offs when making such an incredibly compact lens.  If you want a ‘perfect’ lens it will be much bigger, and thankfully there are plenty of those out there like the Elmarits, Summicrons, Ultrons etc.   This is about picking the right tool for the job.

Thankyou OP for your impressions. I tried looking at AliExpress but its not there. Don't know when it will be released elsewhere...

Apparently it was released on 31st May from  photorumor site

https://photorumors.com/2023/05/20/brightin-star-to-announce-a-new-28mm-f-2-8-lens-for-leica-m-mount/

Early review. Turn on CC for english

I'd like to get it for snap shooting / street, which is cheaper than the ms optics alternatives

@BastianK The corner smear improves when I close down the aperture to f/11 and even better at f/16 but it may start affecting the overall performance. Like @Huss said, there are compromises between compactness, performance and price. I like this lens because of its compactness and I can live with the locking mechanism hiccup. Of course, this is my 2 cents.

For compactness and light weight (+/- cost effectiveness) and if I have to travel light, this will be my 3 lens kit: J12, BS-28 and 5cm Summar.
