Perhaps it's me but I did not see a thread for this lens. IMO it definitely deserves one! I'm not gonna use technical words like 'rendering' and 'leica glow' but I like how the lens create low contrast images with a clarity in them even at f2 wide open with my ME (Typ 220). Here's a few of my favourites for a start, wide open:

As you'll know, it's a lovely lens, especially on modern sensors. Razor sharp, but with slightly less contrast than modern lenses. I used to have one, and used it on the M9 I had at the time. My copy could flare a bit when shot against harsh light, but I really appreciated its tiny size, and bank vault-like build quality. It's like a piece of art, almost over-engineered, a statement of what Leica were able to do at the time

I stupidly sold my eight element. I had paid £400 for it back in 1998, and someone on eBay gave me £1650 for it in 2011. I was going all out to get the newly launched 35 Summilux FLE. The prices of eight elements have continued to rocket, to the point that I couldn't justify buying one back. They're going for collector prices now, which is obviously a shame if you want to buy one.

Looks nice on your camera.

We have some interesting inputs at Collectors area,

I use two of these for many decades, one in M2 mount, the other is M3 type (goggled !).

The hypes for this 8 element is good thing to balance the 'asph/apo' hypes.

Nice 35mm but in my use not any "better" than my other 35mm lenses.

😇

My now prefered is "not loved" lens or non hyped Summarit-M 2.5/35, just a lens to use without fear.

I used to own lenses/bodies which are considered brand new - flawless in appearance (mint). I would fear to bring them outside for fear of scratching or dropping (M10-R Black Paint comes to mind) but somehow the 8e inspires me to bring it out even more, even though I know its value and the potential pain of losing it to damage or theft. Perhaps its the small size and featherweight which made me do so. Nowadays the 8e is permanently glued to my ME and my 35 FLE Edition 60 has been sitting in the dry cabinet since I got the former.

Hi @colint544, I did consider the outlay for this piece of 1960s lens and in my mind I was 'is it worth it?' One day a local dealer informed me someone would be trading in his 8e the next day and off I go to the store and saw it, traded my 50 APO and 35 Summaron for it. No regrets. In fact, before I purchased the 8e, my Summaron was glued to my camera body more than the 50 APO. The 50 APO is considered a lightweight lens, but the Summaron (and subsequently the 8e) is even lighter! Perhaps that's the reason I traded in those lenses without second thoughts.

I’m not affiliated with Leica Camera USA but I was just at my local Leica Boutique in Bellevue and looked over this really nice 8e for sale if anyone is looking for a nice one for at a reasonable market price (imho)https://leicacamerausa.com/pre-owned-35mm-summicron-m-f-2-silver-canada-v1-8-element-w-rear-cap-metal-silver-lens-cap-clip-on-vented-hood-clip-on-solid-hood-and-hood-cap-recent-yye-cla.html

I already own a minty one or I would have snagged this one. Check it out if you happen to be looking for one; aperture had distinct clicks, focus very smooth and glass and exterior looked near perfect. Early version too with a #206* serial number.

My copy is at present getting a well deserved CLA, sorely missed in the meantime...  Here´s an old one from it, on my M9.
