I don’t mind the plastic articulated tip on the advance lever, it’s the little pieces in the frame selector (or self timer). I worry about them falling out.

They can - I've seen a number of used M4s with the bits missing. I've seen replacement bits for sale in the past.

Those are the M4-L models.  The L stands for Leicht  i.e. their lightweight model.  It's what the pros use who don't want to be encumbered by unnecessary frivolities.

Leica took the concept even further in this variant, but sadly 'very few of these were made'.

It failed because it still has the plastic inserts on the preview and self timer levers.

Hey, @Huss, I was looking at my new M6 today, and I think the black used on the hotshoe is actually black chrome and not the black paint used on the rest of the body. It's got that black chrome smooth feel to it. Point being, your black chrome MP winder may not be as lonely up there on the top plate after all.

Interestinkly I cannot tell the difference in the finish of the new advance lever compared to the rest of the body.

Looks stock to moi.

It is a ‘nice to have’ thing.  i’m going to hold off doing anything until I need to get something done.  So hopefully never!

I just much prefer the feel of the solid levers, I don’t get the plastic hinged tip ones, and judging by the spare plastic bits sold on ebay, they are not as long lived.

Mine is 57 years old on my M4.  Looks new to me.  My M4 is my only Leica M so I've never experienced the one piece advance levers.  I used Olympus OM-1's with a similar design to the M4's lever and they have held up fine for over 45 years.  But I do get the complaint about the plastic bits on the M4 although I wouldn't dream of replacing them.

Tool fits, just will not budge the ring - turning anti-clockwise of course.

Same result with my M-A!

Is it left or right hand thread. Left (anti clock wise) would make more sense to resist the film advance torque.

anti clockwise to release/unscrew.

Ok, I sucked it up, decided the camera was not going to be the boss of me, and did it!  It is just very very tight, but then it gives, and everything is right with the world.

The MP/M-A/M3 style lever is so much nicer and more solid feeling to use.

Yup film scratching gone, nice solid wind lever added, all is right in my little Leica bubble...

The OM-1 has a hinged film advance lever?  It is plastic tipped but none of the ones I've used have had a hinged knuckle like on the M4 etc.

I don't know why you're messing around with these half measures. Everyone knows that real Leicas don't have wind-on levers.

That's not a real Leica.  Real Leicas are screw mount and have small, beedy peepholes for  VFs.

In 1968 I bought a new M4 instead of a new M3 because I liked the plastic pivoted advance (and lever rewind) better. Then added an M6 in 1985. Both are still going strong - no issues with wither the wind or rewind cranks. (Also on my M5)
