Leica M11M + CV Apo-Lanthar 50.

I’m selling my M10M with intention of getting the M11M to pair with the same APO Lanthar 50mm lens (and its 35mm sibling). Even if Leica keeps ramping up the price of the M bodies, at least we have a growing pool of exceptionally good CV lenses that can balance the price of the overall “kit” with little image quality compromise IMHO. I used to own an M 50 APO, and don’t miss it one bit after using my 50 Lanthar.

Many - perhaps most - of these pictures shown here are (from my point of view) pictures without colors. But no black and white.

LOL.

Most pretentious, narrow minded comment I've seen on this forum, and that's saying something. And I don't even personally enjoy the pics in these threads almost as a rule.

I think you will be happy with them on the M11M. I used both with pleasure on the Sigma fp-L. They are very well suited for a 60mp sensor.

Mostly the images here seem to be lacking mid tone contrast and the whites are not so white? Except for motor bike and car shots and a couple of other images. It's not a criticism of the camera because I know it can take some time to produce a really good workflow with these Monochrom's. I don't know what the DNG's look like for the M11M however coming from the M Monochrom flat files and then the M10M contrasty files where does the M11M stand? I really believe that one needs to use Photoshop in processing these Mono files and to work the contrasts over various layers pushing the darks/whites/brightness to the limits where needed to bring life to the images. These cameras always test ones skills and to change the way things were done in the past. That's the challenge of the Monochrom's and of course achieving wonderful black and white images.

OOC tonal differences between these cameras are in large part due to the default tone curve. I use the MM and M10M and have no problem adjusting the curve as desired, setting black/white points, boosting mid tones, etc, using LR; Photoshop not required. One can easily create a different default tone curve upon import and/or create presets, if desired, for more efficient workflows, but of course each person will develop his/her own approach.  Or not…many seem unaware of the potential rendering options and techniques. I let each pic determine my PP and print rendering goals, regardless of camera used. Like most all aspects of photography, results are more about judgment and decision making than the hardware or software.

In my experience, having worked with M9m, M246, M10m, and now M11m, The M11m files are very flat. Very much like the M9m. The simple workflow I had developed for M10m does not work anymore, and I'm experimenting to find something that works...

ISO 125 35mm f1.4

This is a truly fantastic portrait. I think it would even be stronger if the bright area to the right of the hat was removed.

A full size crop from the image above. The VM apo-lanthar lenses will offer interesting cropping options with the 60mp M11M.
