nicelynice Posted May 17, 2023 Share #464 Posted May 17, 2023 Really hoping the price is reasonable compared to the Q2 (as there is a rumor it will sit alongside the Q2), since the only feature I really want is USB-C charging, but it's an absolute must - I want the Q3 for backpacking (and travel), but there's no way I'm carrying an external charger and nearly doubling the bulk
Le Chef Posted May 17, 2023 Share #465 Posted May 17, 2023 The Nitecore charger for the Q2 is tiny and weighs only a few grams.

I'm hoping the Q3 is only 20% more than the Q2: $7,000 US dollars to start. Other soothsayers here think it will be higher. One guy thinks it will be only $6200 +/- but I think he's setting himself up for outrage.

Just sold the Q2M, so ready with some cash for the Q3 but have not pre-ordered. The 64gb internal storage? well as the Qs don't have dual-card slots, this might help for professional work. Shoot RAW on card, JPG backups to internal storage. Extra peace of mind, particularly for those using one for weddings. Only recently became apparently there is a screw hole on the shutter button, really happy about that. Street photography, hipshooting, I cradle the camera with both hands and use the side of my thumb to press the shutter (just my way of coping with the street photography anxiety, and I like the angle) - anyway sometimes I find I haven't taken a photo because I didn't press the shutter far enough, a soft shutter button addon works for me. Live music / chihuahuas / other random stuff at low angles - means I'm happy for a flip screen, the Hasselblad X2D got one and my Sony A1's have them and I use them all the time. 60MP means the 50mm has a few more MP which is nice for when I want to use it, though I only really used crop modes for live music where I wanted an added variety of shots without having to take another camera. Phase detection, improved AF? I'm hoping that will help with wide open hip shooting street photography, and maybe it'll be less likely to choose bright skies over the subject when using wide area AF. what i don't like, is the price. Tell me, why did you sell the Q2M? I sold my Q2 last year for the Q2M, and now am making myself crazy thinking about the Q3 (I also have the SL2-S) Thanks

It's not about complication, it's just about use case. If you don't need the tilt-swivel-screen that's fine. Just accept that not everyone has the same needs and wants or the same body proportions as you do. The Q3 will have the tilt screen we've now seen plenty of pictures of. Although I dislike the design, I welcome the added versatility to shoot with such a screen. I would've liked a more streamlined design, personally. At €6000+ this gadget needs to work good and look good too. This design falls definitely in the 'useful' but not 'good design' category imho. I have to see if the pros of the rest of the body outweigh this eyesore of a display design. For me this is definitely a point to consider getting a used Q2. It's just that ugly. I saw those chargers on Fleabay for £59 and Nitecore is a trustworthy company unlike some of the other far eastern electronics makers who will site the high voltage section of the charger fractions of a millimetre from the low voltage and with no proper insulation. I have a Nitecore charger for 18650 and AA batteries for many years and lots of their 18650 cells. Wilson

Qwertynm Posted May 17, 2023 Share #473 Posted May 17, 2023 RE battery: with USB-C charging pretty certain to be part of the package why not just buy a powerbank and charge the camera with that? If you're not shooting an event, where you can't miss a moment (wedding for example) I don't see a reason why anyone would buy the overpriced Leica batteries. Or a stage performance, or a family event, or a party, or street photography, or on the moors.......... There are times when you just need another battery. As it happens I have five between the Q2 and SL2-S. One, possibly two, more than I need, but I forgot how many I already had when I bought the last one.

wlaidlaw Posted May 17, 2023 Share #476 Posted May 17, 2023 It is pretty difficult to connect a Powerbank if you are in the middle of say the Indian Himalayas. I always carry at least one spare battery if I am using a digital camera. There are few things more useless than a digital camera with a flat battery. My general practice when travelling is that when I get back to my hotel, I will immediately put the least discharged battery on a charger. By the time I have had dinner and am going to bed, that will be charged and I can put the second battery on charge overnight. That way I always start the day with a pair of fully charged batteries. I also have bad past experience of in camera charging with a Canon camera, where the battery overheated and melted inside the camera. Amazingly once I had scraped the melted remains of the battery out of the camera, it still worked with a fresh battery. With my M10-R and its small batteries when using the current hungry EVF for GPS geolocation, I usually carry two spare batteries. Luigi Crescenzi made me a very neat leather holder for two M10 batteries, which prevents them shorting out on coins in your pocket. I am now too old and feeble to hump around a camera bag, hence my desire for a one camera solution that does nearly everything, of the Q3. As I have said before, I would personally have preferred a CL2 but that is not going to happen. Wilson

Yes, USB-C charging will be good to have - as long as it allows you to use the camera at the same time, like the SL2-S. I record stage performances by video while connected to mains power. As for the cost, they have been the same batteries since the SL, so I haven't had to change battery systems since 2015, and (aside from buying one too many), I save by not buying spare batteries for each camera. The CL and Sigma fp had the same convenience, though the Panasonic batteries were much cheaper. I've looked at powerbanks (and used one with a phone for a while), but I wouldn't get the use out of them for how I work.

What do you think? Just noticed the memory card door on the bottom has a different shape - it's wider at the point where the card is inserted. Could this be to accommodate the CFExpress card? That would be nice. Welcome, dear visitor! wlaidlaw Posted May 17, 2023 Share #480 Posted May 17, 2023 Is the battery the same as the SL type 601 (Mk.1 digital SL), as I already have loads, well 4 anyway, of those, which would avoid having to further swell Leica's profits. Wilson
