The instructions I found on the Leica US site are still 1.107 (as of 5:26PM MST) even though the firmware itself is labeled 1.110. I'm not sure what route you took to get the one you sent me but I appreciate it.

I downloaded the instructions and firmware from the US site around 0900CST and the instructions said 1.110. Checked a minute ago and it was the same version.

When Stuffit Expander tries to open the M8-1_1110-upd file the following message appears:

"The file "m8-1_1110-1.upd" does not appear to be compressed or encoded. It is advised that you obtain further information about

the contents of this file from the sender or provider of the file. It will help to know what program created the file and what

operating system(s0 the file can be used on."

 

Previously I upgraded my M8 without a problem when I was using Tiger OS10.4.

 

Suggestions appreciated

Leica is aware that the AWB needs to be improved. Improving the current AWB algorithms did not prove to be a promising way to come to a satisfactory result. Therefore Leica is working on a new setup of algorithms to come to a reliable AWB function. Intensive tests have still to be made, therefore we cannot give a specific launch date at this time.

 

I would think this is still in the works.

In Windows a ZIP file looks like a folder/directory and if you expand that folder you can see the actual file contained in the ZIP. I have never used a Mac but it could be you are looking at and trying to expand the file contain inside the ZIP file. Try highlighting just the .ZIP file before you run stuffit.

I had no problems using leopard.

However if the file is called m8-1_1110-1.upd it has already been unzipped.

Just copy it to the card.

I believe Safari unzips zip files automatically by default

I used firefox so it arrived zipped

If the file is called m8-1_1110-1.upd - you've already unziped it once. The correct name is m8-1_1110.upd. Worked fine for me. Sorry.

You guys are right: The new software doesn't change high ISO performance.

 

But this made me realize how much OS X cleans up chroma noise automatically: On my G5, I open up the DNG in Preview, zoom in to 100%, and for a few seconds, the view is very "colorful", and then 85% of the chroma noise just vanishes, just like that. Has it always been like that? I'm still using Panther at home, but just installed Leopard on the office machine.

Preview has always had an "anti-aliasing" feature, but I think it's much stronger in Leopard. Too much so in fact. I don't think the images you see in Preview will be representative of what others will see in a different viewer app.

When you download the update from Leica it will appear on your desktop already 'unstuffed', no need to do anything else to it if you see M8-1_1110.upd.

Mount your SD card using a card reader then open 'Finder' to locate it. Open it and drag the .upd file into it.

I suspect your tactile senses are getting better. The exposure lock feature is purely a function of the shutter release button & switch and has nothing to do with firmware.

 

I personally have never had a problem finding and holding the exposure lock stop, without actually tripping the shutter, on any of the 5 M8's I've had in my hands.

What do you mean "M8 won"? How did you judge? A4 is also a bit small, even the native file size of the M8 is larger or just as large as A4, so it was hardly about resolution, so what did you look for?

Over all image quality. Now If you had seen the printed A4 picture. You would agree the M8 was superiour. Without any adjustment, tonality, sharpness, etc

 

However is was a test of a 8000euro camera vs a 2500euro camera. (With lenses included)

In no way was this a scientific test, but we did it as god as we could.

 

And I mean, the M8 won this test.

 

We also compared the files on screen, and the same was seen onscreen. M8 files where superiour. We tested apertures 1,4 to 5,6. The Canons 50mm f1.4 lens was awful at f1.4. After 2.8 it got better, and was at it's best (atleast to our eyes) at F4.

 

The Summilux 35mm Asph was extremely sharp and great tonality at f1.4. The difference was so great between the two cameras at F1.4 you could decide just looking at the LCD screen on the camera which produced the better picture.

 

At F4 both lenses was very close, the M8 was still sharper, had a more natural tone.

Jamie, we did not compare the under F4 files for final conclusion.

No need to compare the Canon lens is "very poor" under f2.8.

 

The Canon 50mm F1.4 is regarded as one of the best Canon lenses. For many years it was the only good Canon 50mm., there was no L. I have had the Canon EF 50mm F1.0 L, and talking about poor lenses here we have one of the winners... The current 50mm L lens is better than the f1.4, but we did not have this lens to compare.

 

If you suspect the Current 50mm F1.8 MK2 to better, then you are wrong. The MK 1 might be.

 

We Leica guys are funny, we're not happy when the 5D beats the M8, nor are we happy when the M8 beats the 5D

 

I wanted to cmpare similar focal lenghts, (due to crop the 35mm is the closest) and similar maximum aperture lenses.

In terms of price, Canon do not have a 3300euro 50mm lens. They had, the 50mm f1.0. Would this have been a fair play? No, it would not.

 

So no idea of posting the results here, it's clearly all about apples and oranges.

 

Speaking of apples, have you heard about the Arnold apples........
