jaapv Posted March 25, 2023 Share #2 Posted March 25, 2023 Hard to tell what is going on without any data, I would advise to get to your Leica dealer straight away and ask them to sort it They may well provide a loaner, but why didn’t you revert to Manual Focus to get your shots? And, a professional photographer without backup gear?

I don't need the snobbery - I have a problem with a relatively new and very expensive camera and I'm trying to understand why the autofocus randomly stopped working. Please restrain this garbage about "professionalism" as it's hard enough getting anything out of Leica people without this kind of rubbish. I've never had this issue arise before, and after about 40 shoots I assumed this camera could be relied upon to continue to function in a particular way. As of this evening, mid-shoot and on location, I can no longer use touch AF, face detection is not functioning, no AF frame appears on the image and it no longer focuses on anything at all automatically. I've tried adjusting every setting I can think of for the last several hours, and have reset camera settings twice. Nothing appears to make it function as usual. I don't need a lecture about what a "professional" would do - I need very straightforward suggestions about why my camera might suddenly not be working in the way it has been operating. Anakronox Posted March 25, 2023 Share #4 Posted March 25, 2023 Did you check to see if you put the camera in manual focus mode? Little button on the focus tab. If you can turn the focus ring freely, you’re in manual focus mode. Autofocus will not work while this is in effect.

anomalek Posted March 25, 2023 Author Share #6 Posted March 25, 2023 Thank you - I assumed it would be something very simple and basic like this. I can turn the focus ring freely, so clearly that's the issue. The "little button on the focus tab" is the small button in the center of the protruding area on the ring around the lens, I'm assuming. Nothing to do with snobbery. Just genuine amazement that one would not take the simple precaution of a backup camera when one is on a paid shoot. The reason your camera is not working may be that it broke down, which can happen to any complicated mechanical tool, no matter how expensive. Or , I never suggest that to a complaining poster in a first reply, it may be user error. Even if the last seems to be the case, it might be wise to keep some used camera as a backup just in case the camera does break down. Leicas are not completely immune… I would if my income depended on it. 9

bobtodrick Posted March 25, 2023 Share #15 Posted March 25, 2023 I would suggest to the OP that if he ever comes back for help he might want to tone down his attitude. And change his screen name…he’s built himself a fine reputation as ‘anomalek’😂 1
mikeLD Posted March 25, 2023 Share #16 Posted March 25, 2023 My hat is off to Olaf_ZG for his quick insight and solution no matter how seemingly obvious. Having spent much of my life as a helicopter scout pilot (you know that piece of complex equipment with 10,000 moving parts all flying in close formation) that in the heat of battle all of those things we should remember don't always pop up. I have empathy for anomalek's crisis. My Q2 still has some mysteries for me too but when not in the heat of battle I do go back to the manual, like my aircraft checklist and try to find the root cause. As was mentioned, the Q2 is much more complex than an old Fed Type IIb Leica knock off that I have and may be more complex than we can handle sometimes. Thank you all for being here, we are all in this together. 1

Again to the OP…slow down next time you post and calm down before you hit ‘submit’.

Maxpilot Posted March 25, 2023 Share #19 Posted March 25, 2023 Q2 is different from other cameras, it is a Leica. I transitioned from Canon and Sony to Leica Q2 recently. Practice and play with it learn its pitfalls such as accidental autofocus off. I feel your pains Anomalek but my general impression is any tool needs to mastered for a little while before you try to make money with it. Leica Q2 is special and will reward you eventually with stunning imagery and in my case, a new love affair with photography. Cheers.

Oh, wait - maybe do that before the shit hits the fan in the middle of a paid shoot?? And as was suggested above, maybe have a backup camera for paid work? Any kind of backup camera with enough megapixels, ISO range and a decent lens that will produce acceptable image quality for the client's needs - it doesn't have to be another Q2 or an M11. Not to appear to be a snob, but editing posts for typos before posting is also a good idea. As for the rest, please see my post #16 here: https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/373537-leica-grip-is-a-lot-nicer-than-expected/#comment-4731382 And welcome to the forum. As the old saying goes, "You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar." Just saying... Edited March 25, 2023 by Herr Barnack
