m7 gray market discount?

Marco,

Why bother with a gray market new M7? Certainly with the USD at al ten year low against the euro and sterling, it's unlikely that you'll find many deals out there. For us on the other side of the pond, now that's a different matter.

Why not just buy a second hand one? There are loads of film M bodies kicking around after people bought into the M8. I would think you could get a pristine M7 (maybe even with a bit of passport left) for USD 2500-3000.

Good luck

Charlie

An Ebay search turns up this example.

Peter is bang on the gong! I believe Tony at Popflash has new M7s listed for that 2500-2800 range...and he ships for free in the US.

Look around, buy a good used M7 for around 2000-2200 USD. I would ask if it has the VF upgrade, etc..

I was under the impression that warranties did not transfer. Am I mistaken?

That one is mine actually. :)

Popflash lists new M7s at $3495. which is Leica's fixed price. Am I missing something?

You are correct about the price for a new M7 though Leica's fixed price is now actually supposed to be even higher at $3695. It looks like he hasn't updated the website to reflect this yet. He does have MINT ones for $2897 with a 1-year PopFlash warranty. Meanwhile my new (minus warranty) M7 gathers dust at $400 less than that.

I guess a lot of people have dived head on into the digital age with the introduction of the M8 though if I had the money I would want one of each. I think they compliment each other well. It makes you wonder though, what was Leica thinking with their $200 price increase on the M7 and MP a couple months ago?

I have been very tempted to spring for your M7, but the combination of shipping to Japan and duties would negate any savings. :(

I agree. One of each would really be the optimum setup. I keep telling myself, "Some day . . ."

popflash bodies for 3695 are usa w/passport. They have gray market m7 starter kits with the m7+ 50mm f/2 cron for ~3800. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to sell a brand new 50mm f2 for 1.2k, thus making the new gray market m7 around 2600. There's plenty of ex- mint m7s for 2100-2300 as well (KEH) has one while I type. Personally, if I bought used, it would have to be mint and around 2100.

yes, I consider myself very lucky to have the M7 and M8, and they compliment each other wonderfully. I often shoot them together and the shared AE and metering system and same shutter dial make it easy to go back and forth. I added the winder as well as in the heat of action I'd forget to advance the M7 after shooting the M8! I got mine when the $500 discount on a lens was in place which helped a bit as I got a lens (50/1.4) that I wanted anyway and which in fact lives on the M7. best...Peter
