IMO, the ergonomics of Leica 24-70 are better than with Sigma (had both, sold Sigma). The new 100-400 is apparently 400g heavier than Sigma. We'll see why once it is launched.

Can you link to information about differences in coatings, QA or optical performance between Leica branded and their Sigma/Lumix counterparts? I’m not aware of this information, but I haven’t looked very hard.

A search on this forum for each of the "rebradged" lenses will yield the results you are looking for.

I own a Leica 90-280 zoom lens. It works well in darker settings, is extremely sharp, takes excellent portrait shots, and is terrific (at least for me) for landscape photography. The downside? It’s  likely a lot more expensive than the new 100-400 lens. 
 

if you can afford it, I say go with the 90-280 zoom. If you need more of a zoom, a 1.4 extender is coming out as well.

as far as I remember the Sigma converters 1.4/2 boths can‘t be used with 90-280

No. So far it’s only a mix of wishful thinking, buyer’s remorse and hardcore brand loyalty.

I do not think Leica ever 'just' rebadged anything. It is not because they roll of the same production line that it is the same lens. Even in the time of the R lenses, there were optical differences between the original Minolta and the Leica R samples. I heard Leica rejected 80% of Minolta production for some models. So worst case, I would expect to see a top 10% selection for this 'rebadged' one. And I hope it will go further than that like using different glass and coatings.

So another (tweaked) rebrand...Apparently there was some issue regarding the sigma one, so I guess Leica will address this in their rebrand? I wonder how many will purchase this one in lieu of the inferior sigma lens.

I don't have numbers, but I think quite a lot of people got the 24-70. If purchased as a kit, the price difference is negligible compared to getting the Sigma, not to mention the convenience.

Out of curiosity, what is the issue with the Sigma 100-400?

Lots of people tested them, including people right here on this forum who owned both versions. You can read about that in this thread and in many others.

The inherent problem with these tests, and other tests on the web, is that they get dismissed immediately as being "biased,"  because the person tester either owns or sells lenses. Of course, no-one does "unbiased" lens reviews on the web. They all have something to sell,  they all have affiliate links, and none of them do a proper lens test anyway.

 

Short answer: that would be great, but no one properly tests any lenses anymore. The best resource is actual photographers who have owned both lenses, many of which are on this forum.

Oh they did many times. Of course they can't just say they re-badged, they use words better QC etc, however in reality those lenses are optically identical (sample variation may take place one way or another).

I haven't seen a proper a scientific test like photozone, lenstip or camerarentals does. You need to exclude a sample variation, so you have to have multiple copies of the same lens to make a conclusion.

I just checked pictures of Leica 1.4x TC and compared to my Sigma 1.4x, they're identical. Interesting that leica didn't release 2x, but 1.4x price is jaw dropping
