I asked the guys in the Leica store if both the IBIS in the SL2 and the OIS in the lens were both active simultaneously

The SL2 system has IBIS that changes automatically, the camera chooses which one to use and in what combination in an intelligent way. There is no way to influents it.

You can choose panning and to turn it off.

the SL2 camera has a power switch. not sure how it works, but the top wheel has a magnet functionality and has no opening.

The SL2 has external controls, which a lens could have using the same type of technology to avoid water and dust ingress. Call it a switch, call it a button, a wheel, etc, the point stands.

As far as I know, the L 1.4x Extender is designed specifically, and only, for the new 100-400 lens

Is it though?

The original Sigma teleconverter works with more lenses. Pretty sure the Leica will work with these Sigma lenses too.

Lens Compatibility
  • 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary
  • 105mm F2.8 DG DN Macro Art
  • 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports

The Leica is based on the Sigma 1.4x. The Sigma 1.4x is not compatible with the 90-280 because it can't even be mounted due to the construction of the Leica lens.

The extender works with other lenses too, so not only the 100-400. You're correct when you say it won't work with the 90-280, but the extender works with two additional lenses (probably next in line for a rebadge treatment)

I didn't imply it won't work with other lenses, my reply addresses only the 90-280.

not that my opinion counts, but I find this very annoying that the extender does not work with the 90-280.

it is a great Lens, very expansive as well, and it would be nice for customers who invested in such gear to be able to expand its usability…

Unless they planned for it from the start the teleconverter can’t work: you have to design the lens allowing the space for the protruding part of the teleconverter to be accommodated inside in the back of the lens’s optical cell!

The 90-280 was designed before the L2 alliance, it was not in the plans!
