Wasn't paying attention and my Q2 slid out through the back of a bench at the park today onto some concrete. Fell maybe two feet. Would have been totally fine had I not gotten unlucky as to where the actual impact took place -- right on the multi dial at the far back right (from the photographer's POV) corner.

Other than a minor nick on the body (which doesn't bother me), the actual dial got compressed and is now not perfectly circular, although it still works. (You can actually turn the clear thing underneath the dial as well, and that clicks just fine; seems like the black dial is just there to hold the button actuator thing in place?)

What's NOT working is the actual button there, which makes the camera like 10% unusable.

Funny thing is, if I pull the dial off, but leave the little button actuator/pin thing that goes in the middle... the button pushes just fine.

Which leads me to believe that the problem is just the misshapen dial.

Will probably take the camera over to Leica Miami later this week but, in the meantime, I'm fairly confident that if I could get my hands on a replacement dial... I could fix this myself in about 5 minutes.

Bad idea? (Where could I even get this piece? Can't find it after ~10 minutes Googling. Not sure what you'd even call it.)

PS -- I guess I should point out, as you can see in the photos, that the clear piece that goes UNDER the dial and button actuator piece is also very VERY slightly cracked and should also be replaced. Not immediately clear how this piece comes off. Will be a bit upsetting if I need to send my camera away for weeks (or longer) and spend $$$ fixing something so minor. But my guess is that I'm out of luck.

Well, I wouldn’t.  Just like with a slight bumper accident on a car- there could be hidden damage that sneaks up and causes issues in the future.  I would take (or ship) it to a reputable repair site, or back to Leica, and have it properly repaired - which would include an inspection and additional repair if necessary.  Then……. Keep the strap around your neck, or shoulder, and NEVER put your camera down anywhere where gravity can have a go at it. 😉

I too would have it repaired.  Most Likely the leica Store on the Miracle Mile would send it to Leica, NJ.  they would order the parts and fix it.  However if they discover something "hidden" they might need to send it to Germany.

If you lucked out and the problems are just the dial pieces, and you wanted fix it yourself, you'd need to order the parts either directly from Leica NJ or through the Leica stored.

Sending it in to Leica USA later today. Will report back.

While I understand this is my fault and that I need to wait... I'm going to be pretty upset if this repair takes more than a month. I NEED the camera for a long trip we're taking starting in the middle of May. Not sure what I'd do if I don't have it back by (and well before) then.

You'll hear back from Leica with a description of what they will do and a cost estimate.  They will await your approval and credit card information.  They will also assign you an contact individual who is very responsive.  often, the estimate is higher than the actual charge.

Good to know — thanks for the intel. I pre-authorized a pretty good amount in hopes of expediting the process. Option to do so was on the form.

Given my loose lug… this might have (almost) been a blessing in disguise. (Or maybe I’m justifying my own mistake. Who knows.)

Hoping to have the camera back in a few weeks!

If you absolutely need a camera for an upcoming trip, I’d hedge your bets and line up a rental unit through lens rentals or another outfit.

I don't NEED it until mid May for a long family trip. I WANT it every day 😃

You'd be lucky

...I know. "A few" weeks is an unreasonable expectation, and I'm not totally serious. I do think ~a month is a reasonable expectation though. Here's hoping...

Hopefully Leica don't try to claim that your wobbly strap lug was a result of the fall as that does entail taking the camera apart = costly!

Sure hope not. It’s been wobbly basically since I got the camera. Very VERY slightly wobbly on one side. Never would have sent it in just for that but, obviously, given I’m sending it in already… made sense to call attention to it.

There have been a number of reports here of people 'losing' their Q cameras when the strap lug fell off whilst walking around - it's fixed from inside with two little screws and it seems that the factory aren't always careful to use thread lock on them! It would have got worse and failed eventually.

Right. Blessing in disguise perhaps.

Meantime, I emailed the repairs department about general timeframes and they actually told me they have free loaners available. Good to know!

Twice in the last dozen years I had a free loaner, to be returned before they will send back my repaired camera.  One of those times I kept the loaner until after a trip

Amazing that they do this. Guess this is one of the perks of going with Leica vs. others.

Think I can convince them to give me a monochrome (or an M of some kind) as a loaner instead of a Q2? 😅

Hi SirBlunder,

Any news?

Thanks

Hi there. Sorry, what exactly are you looking for? Got my Q2 fully repaired. They gave me a loaner (a regular q2; I asked for a monochrome or even an M of some kind, but I think they only loan out the exact model that they're repairing).

I went into a bit more detail about the whole process here (see below) but am happy to answer any other questions you have.
