Shepherdphotographer Posted February 16, 2023 Share #1 Posted February 16, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Good morning, what is the battery life of the Leica SL? I ask you, please, to specify the mode of personal use of the camera, that is, whether using only the optical viewfinder (and inevitably checking the quality of the shot more than a few times with the monitor), or always the monitor. Thanks in advance everyone!

Olaf_ZG Posted February 17, 2023 Share #3 Posted February 17, 2023 I don’t use the screen a lot, I trust what I see in the EVF. My battery last me a month, but then, I take 300-500 images on average with the SL during a month. That said, I have spare ones, cause in case of an event, I don’t want to be without. LEGEND Posted February 17, 2023 Share #5 Posted February 17, 2023 Hi, I also used my SL 601 in different scenarios. Mostly for street photography and fashion. When I did street photography I got around 400 shoots before I had to change the battery. This is with my Vario-Elmarit SL 24-90 Asph. mounted, OIS on , GPS and WiFi off, manual mode and and single point focus... Also moderate checking the photos on LCD screen and menu use... During shooting a fashion week with this camera and lens I got around 600 - 700 photos from one battery charge before I needed to change her. I also had my Vario-Elmarit SL 24-90 Asph. mounted, OIS on , GPS and WiFi off, power saving and screen shutdown off, manual mode and and single point focus... This time I seldom opened the menu and checked the photo on LCD screen because I already have this info inside the EVF. I was just concentrated on making photos of models when they walked down the catwalk... Also I got the same amount of photos from one battery when I was shooting in my studio, around 600... Battery life on SL 601 depend how you use the camera, what mode is it, how much you check the photos, did you browse through the menu and other things. The outside temperature influence the battery life. The colder it is the less battery capacity you have and less photos you can make... I recommend if you have the same camera and lens as me to use them as I described in my example. The simpler the camera setup and usage is you will get more of battery life... But on the other hand the differences are not that much... Think, less is more... Nikola

Thanks in advance everyone! There is no optical viewfinder. Strictly EVF and a good one at that. 350-425 shots on a charge.

Shepherdphotographer Posted February 18, 2023 Author Share #11 Posted February 18, 2023 There is a difference among an user and another, but 400 shoots is a good number. I didn't think so many shoots, however I will buy another battery as soon as possible.
dem331 Posted February 18, 2023 Share #12 Posted February 18, 2023 Someone on this forum suggested to always run the batteries down before charging them. Great advice. This has helped me to significantly increase battery performance on M8/M240/SL2. Previously I was often recharging when they were 50% full.

LEGEND Posted February 18, 2023 Share #14 Posted February 18, 2023 Hi, one tip... I had purchased USB battery charger for the Leica SL BP-SCL4 batteries and one power bank. That way I can charge the SL batteries on the go when I shoot on the location. You use one battery and when the time come to change her you put fully charged battery in the SL and this one you start charging per this Nitecore USLS USB charger for Leica Series BP-SCL4 batteries and the power bank. You you can charge relatively fast 2-3 hours to the 70-80% charge... This should be enough to continue shooting until is the timefor next change of batteries. Uf course the more SL batteries you have the better... I used this for my SL 601 until I got 3 extra batteries but since I had purchased SL2 I don't need that Nitecore USB charger. SL2 and SL2-S have USB-C input and you can charge the batteries directly inside the camera. I think it is even faster than normal Leica charger. You just need USB-C cable that can do power delivery and strong power bank. There is specific thread on the LUF about this topic... Here is link to the Nitecore web site and this Nitecore SLBP for BP-SCL4 batteries charger...https://www.nitecorestore.com/Nitecore-ULSL-Charger-for-Leica-Batteries-p/chg-nite-ulsl.htm Nikola 2

Thank you If you have more question I will try to help if I can... I used SL 601 for almost 3 years until I purchased Leica SL2 and later SL2-S... Original SL 601 is great camera with excellent Leica colour science and you will be happy making photographs with her. Just as I did... Leica SL 601 also have her own quirks just as any other Leica camera or the camera from another brand. It is as it is and you will need to learn how to use her. I think this is part of Leica camera character and I had no problems with it. I loved the process of learning it and the workflow of operating the the Leica SL 601... Have fun, don't stress about it and make good photographs... It is the “Leica way“... Nikola
SrMi Posted February 18, 2023 Share #17 Posted February 18, 2023 The battery “life” depends more on LCD and EVF use than on number of shots. The biggest battery drain is EVF, therefore, extended mode is recommended (LCD off, EVF with eye sensor).

Of course, I intended to do a survey and ask all of you how many shots you can take on average, please reporting your habits regarding EVF and LCD on or off, how often: it is logical and elementary and always true that the battery lasts more with LCD off (the EVF necessarily stays on if you shoot; I'm interested in knowing how many shots you can take, on average, not how long the life of a battery is with or without the LCD, just how many shots you can take with a single charge. Yes, a number for a typical use is useful. My point was that if you have more or less than what others experience, it would not be caused by faulty camera or battery, but by ‘atypical’ use or suboptimal LV mode.

This information is for me to have an idea, since I was thinking of buying an SL and the battery costs 150 euros..... Of course, there are other more important things that influence the decision.......
