It does seem odd they paired such a small lens with that hood. I wonder if it's any more effective than the previous version?

I've never used the 28 Elmarit without the hood so I don't know how necessary it really is, but I like it for protection.

Has anyone noticed whether this lens is prone to flare?  If not, then I guess you could use a filter for protection and skip the hood if you're looking for the most compact form factor.

Did you recently look at the prices on the second hand market for a 1. or 4. version 35mm Summicron, or a 35mm Summilux pre-asph? Or for a a M6? Or even a - former -"budget lens" like the 1:2.8/35mm Summaron? It is now generally more expensive or at least as expensive than a 35mm Summarit - which is 50 or more years younger.

In which respect do the Summarits lack longevity and/or serviceabilty? Did you ever look at the rear element of a normal Summaron?

By the second hand market, I do not only think of collectors items like the 35 cron v1 or v4. I am not saying the Summarit (F2.5) are bad lenses. I have them myself. (75 and 90mm) They even make my point. Optically they are very good, but they feel 'cheaper' than the normal range. In the end they become Leica bargains, like Summicron 50mm collapsible, Elmarit collapsible (LTM) especially, Elmar 90, Elmarit 90 and so on. Impopular does not mean bad. And popular does not always guarantees excellence. That is what 'poor' Leica users need to work with. Some will start with a 35mm Summaron, 50mm Elmarit and 90mm Elmar. All 3 together will cost less than half of any new Leica lens now. I started with a CL classic and Summicron 40 C and gathered more gear from then on. Now I do not consider myself a poor user anymore since I built up quite a collection of vintage lenses. But I have never biought any Leica item brand new. That is why I consider myself a middle class Leica user.

Another point I tried to make is that I do not believe the lower price is the main reason for the Elmarits impopularity. Did anyone check sale figures anyway? Total sales for 35mm Summarit F 2.5 are not known but they sold more than 50.000 in the first 5 years.  That is about the same as the number of Summicron 35mm ASPH sold in this period. Or is that also a so called cheaper lens?

My elmarit asph 28 was my least flare prone Leica lens.  Awesome performance.

I always use the metal hood on my 28 Elmarit, with a lens filter, but I do notice sometimes it has a weird flare to it (maybe it’s the filter combined with the hood). Maybe I should try it without the hood?

Keep the hood, lose the filter.  To see if it is what caused the flare.
