I like the new design and love the extra dial. I have the other two dials set to aperture and exp compensation, so I can set the new one to change ISO and I won't have to delve into the menu anymore. This means that I can access all functions I need without taking off my eyes from my subjects. No more unnecessary distractions.

I agree. But I'll point out you can have ISO as the click function for the rear dial (instead of mode selection), which is what I do. So, I can already adjust the same three parameters and I think it'll remain easier than having to use a dial on the left while looking through the EVF.

*If* it's programable then my likely choice would be profile selection or drive mode. I've long though the SL2 could have 1 or 2 more programable buttons.

If that extra dial is such a problem and design flaw, shouldn't it also be banned from the M series... ?

Different shooting philosophy. SL's are likely to be used in a more dynamic manor than an M. Mind you it's not really brilliant on the M, is it? More form over function.

It does not look much smaller in that perspective.

But surprising that Pat shows this so openly. It appears almost like a planned teasing campaign…

Looking smaller and feeling smaller are two different things. Just think about the slight ergonomic tweaks they made to the SL2 yet it feels different in the hand than 601. The camera in that photograph certainly looks like it will feel like the body is smaller in the hand.

there’s a lot of technology in these cameras, pretty hard to shave off a lot of weight and size & and still have effective heat dissipation and good handling.

I respect everyone's opinion who's been with the SL series for a while—I hate when camera companies change my favorite setup. But as someone new to Leica and looking to potentially invest into the system, I much prefer the new size and layout compared to prior SLs. They've retained the stylish design qualities we all love about Leicas while also adding a little more functionality, and did it all in a smaller package. It still looks larger than other mirrorless systems, but the main drawback for the SL from an outsider's perspective has always been size and a lack of quality AF. Seems like they've addressed both here. For the line to be feasible long-term they have to draw in newcomers, and I'm at least one small anecdote that it's working. Excited for the 7th.

I wonder if the new *dial* could *also* house a GPS antenna. Remember the GPS hump on the SL 601?

Sure looks like functionally it would be similar to the wheel on the right side, to have two things the same size/shape with one that turns and one that doesn't seems like a design no-no

It could turn and house a GPS, if it's got a plastic centre. Dual function. I don't care about GPS but that's where I'd put it.

At the end still need more button and dials.... and the new design really speechless

A number of people say they don't like the 'new design'. But what, apart from a new dial and maybe smaller, is different? It's not that I have a view on the matter - I just don't see much change.

If you wanted to emphasise 'smaller' why not an APO lens?

It's like in architecture. A building in its original condition is almost perfect, but becomes unsightly due to unnecessary extensions.

That's true. IMO

Look back to the launch of the SL2 and you'll see exactly the same comments compared to the SL (that ugly asymmetric grip). At the launch of the SL the comments were all about the ugly brutalist design, so out of sympathy with the traditional Leica (M) design values.

In four years time, people here will be writing about the future design classic, the SL3.

The design team in Wetzlar must be smiling, wryly.

Or maybe I've just been here too long🫠!

I personally like "clean" design, SL2 and Q2 both layout and design compared to 1st gen, is the best for me.

Exactly

You still haven't said what is different in what you have seen in the SL3 - is it the new dial? What else?

Due to the new flip screen, the buttons has been moved to the right side, which I preferred on the left. Also, the new dial looks complex when placed on the top. Put design asides, I think the benefits from SL3 for me is the PDAF focusing.
