Got a SL3 on pre order on a Leica Store.

Apparently, is going to be launched on the 7th.

Usually, how long , for pre orders, will they ship ? 

Ie, for peeps that pre order a M11 or a Sl2 or whatever, how long was the shipping vs launch date ?

Looks more tactical than the other SL's 

That step down looks like they basically used a M10/11 mold and added the grip screen etc. 

I have a feeling we'll be seeing a SL-P or SL-D that will be super small, simple with the Panasonic s5ii sensor. 

I don't see a SL3-S being made when you can buy a S5II for 1250 used right now (what a steal).

It can vary greatly. Ask your Leica Store. The shop typically know more or less the estimate of how many cameras they are due to receive and how many preorders they have waiting. If you are a regular customer they might give you an estimate.

Bought two APO’s ( 35 and 90 ) from them and a 50mm Summilux Black Chrome - so when I asked to be put on the pre order list and said I was ok with a deposit to secure a slot, they say “no need from you”.

Asked a friend (shopowner, sells Leica stuff) what the preorder situation is. Zero preorders, zero customer interest. Might be the Leica product with least amount of interest in a long time.

If it has the size of a Pana S5 II, I might be interested.

I’m sure SL3 will be widely available, I’ll be surprised if it was sold out for months like the q3.

Between the M and the Q series, I would expect that to be the case. Unless they plan for it to outsell either of those two, it could still be a commercial success.

We read the M11 series was a best-seller among Leica's 2023 financials perhaps followed by the Q series sales according to this article with only "positive feedback" for SL cameras and lenses:

I'm not sure a smaller SL3 with perhaps not yet mature PDAF is going to raise SL system awareness/desirability over other high end full frame mirrorless camera to any great degree. The full frame mirrorless market is already more than fiercely competitive and possibly oversaturated with more to come. To me the mark of distinction, above all others in the same category of the SL system is very specifically the SL APO Primes IQ. Even though I truly enjoy using the SL2 much more than I could have imagined.

I do hope the SL3 leads the Leica SL system sales to a healthy, long-term future. 🤞

If the PDAF is anything like the S5ii, which is likely, I can assure you that it is quite mature.

The overall weight of AF Zoom /prime and body is pretty much the same. Who cares if it is 1,3kg or 1,4kg?

You would only complain if you use them with manual tiny lenses. Especially coming from CL or whatever.

I picked up a Sigma 28-70/2.8 (470 grams) for my SL2S and it is remarkably small, lightweight, and sharp. Add that to my 100-400, 105 macro and five M lenses and I’m totally covered.

 I never thought the SL2S would replace my M10 as an every day carry but with the 28-70, I find I tend to take it more often. Too bad Leica doesn’t rebrand that lens as well.

Still looking forward to trying and possibly buying a SL3 though.

Yeah. Translation from marketing jargon: they cannot publicly lie and say it was a success, but they don’t want to scare away people from the upcoming SL3 either, so “positive feedback” it is. 😉

I think the SL3 will sell better, the camera is addressing many of the SL2 weak points between flip screen, PDAF, smaller etc. 

Now if only Leica could cough up some smaller non-rebranded prime lenses, that would be great.

Well the design...I guess 'll be in the minority disliking it. And is the step down really necessary? I shall see the official pics until then I hope the technical aspects will trump.

The body design certainly looks a lot ‘busier’ than previous generations. And while it’s hard to accurately tell from these images, it appears the flip screen does not sit flush with the back of the camera (similar to the Q3).

I am firmly in the camp of welcoming the size and weight reductions but a large part of the SL line’s appeal and point of difference (for me) has always been the clean and minimal design. However, I will wait to see it in the flesh before passing judgement.

Doesn’t look like it is for me, I am sad to say (but figured). I hope they stick to a pro sized body if they make an S4 mirrorless. I agree that it looks quite crowded…also with the screen really intruding into the area of the right hand and not being flush etc. But maybe it is just the angle? I look forward to seeing them side by side.
