If performance is a priority, a silver Olympus OMD with a fully articulating screen would perform better too and cost and weigh significantly less.

Forgot how many buttons a camera could have…

If you think that's bad, don't get a video camera then, lol.

Yes - I had an OMD-EM5ii for a while. Very glittery, lots of buttons, and a graphical menu interface that always seemed to be one step ahead of me I.e. I never knew which direction it had taken that step.

I would have persisted but although I later found I could live with the Leica CL’s APSC, MFT was always slightly unsatisfying for image quality.

I tested SL2S's autofocus for tracking a sitting person, while I was moving towards him and I can only say that AF is not only subpar, it's the worst I have ever seen.
The only real update SL3, SL3S need is decent phase AF.

By today's standards having 50-60% hit rate for that price is just criminal

Hmmm.... My hit rate for a slowly moving (semi static) model is MUCH higher than that. Around 90%.  No worse than my A7R5 for those types of subjects. I don't like the EVF jiggle but the results are fine. People also forget that the tradeoff for CDAF is outstanding IQ. Basically nothing in the 24MP MP outperforms that sensor. At any ISO. And the files are super robust and have zero banding issues when pushed allowing it to use more of it's theoretical DR than a PDAF camera. And it's not like there aren't plenty of cameras with superior AF if you need them. They also have their own stuff to deal with. For anything actually moving fast (ie: not the grandkids....) I just pull out my A1. It's awesome. But in actual system IQ my SL2 is superior.

And whatever you do, if you think it's not good enough AF don't pick up anything with a larger sensor.

As a specialist stills photographer I don't like fully articulated screens. Too slow. Away from the lens axis. The gold standard for me is the Panasonic or Fuji tri flip screens.

In terms of image quality alone, I can see your point.  I don't find myself missing focus much, but I don't shoot moving people for the most part. With the SL2-S and the APO Summicron-SL lenses the images are pristine and appear to be much higher resolution than the 24MP sensor would suggest.  There's a part of me that wonders if the perceived resolution of the SL2 files will come close to, if not equal, that of the SL3 because of the PDAF overlay.  Having the Q3, though, I did find the files to be great to work with and never saw any signs of banding.  I'm not selling my SL2-S anytime soon.  I just wonder if the better move, for me, is to pick up a SL2 when they inevitably hit the market in a few weeks.

any news - or rumor - from the rumored launch date for the SL3 ?

Some people say 7-8 March others say 27-28 March.

albeit only Leica knows for sure, any rational thinking on any of those dates ?

I see that the SL3 section in the Leica website exists, so I would be more inclined for the 7-8 ( initial March ) than the latter - two weeks from launch having ready the site its a bit more plausible than 1 month and some, but then again, any guess is good as anyl

I shoot moving people (theatre, dance) and my hit rate with the SL2-S is also around 90% or more. I’m sure there are better AF systems around but my priorities for improvement in the SL3 lie elsewhere.

Pretty good hit rate. My hit rate for dance photography was around 25%, one of the reasons to sell the SL2. Hopefully the SL3 will do a better job.

I got an official invite from Leica Dubai the other day for the 2nd of March:

I've no idea what the event is about.

Strange - I seem to manage.

The problem here is that users tend to expect automated systems to think for them. It is as much -or even more- of a learning curve to be able to use AF to the limit of its capabilities compared to manual focus.
