Kl@usW. Posted September 23, 2023 Share #185 Posted September 23, 2023 Hello, my question to the specialists in this sub-forum: I´m thinking of a 3,5 cm Elmar to use on a Leica Standard. I own a SBLOO --but it is huge even on a II (D) --on a Standard it´s impossible to mount. What was the time-appropriate finder for the 3,5 cm Elmar ? What finder would you suggest today ? The Voigtländer Mini finder is more expensive than an Elmar nowadays-so that's not an option. Thank you for your suggestions !

Hello, Just sharing my personal experience about 35mm external finder, by no means definitive. I have the VC mini finder, which is very compact, bright and nice looking on my Leica IIIf. It has both 28mm and 35mm frame lines, but due to its poor eye relief, I can't really see the 28mm frame lines well with my glasses on. It is great for 35mm view though. It is a good metal finder just that it is now getting rare and very expensive. I have another mini finder Ricoh GV-2 which has 28mm frame lines only. I compared it with the VC mini finder and found their view to be identical. Same poor eye relief for 28mm. So it works well as a 35mm viewfinder too. The GV-2 is not metal but well built and very bright. It is not cheap but still affordable (~$150). I reckon it would look great on a Leica Standard. Welcome, dear visitor! There is another Voigtlander 35mm metal VF, not as compact as the mini finder, but price is half of it (about $300, not cheap.)
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! I think I'll try a GV2 - if the optics are similar to the mini finder that would be a nice alternative and the black plastic exterior would match the black paint... Ecar Posted September 30, 2023 Share #191 Posted September 30, 2023 OK, I managed to do a quick comparison between (a) a 1926 "#1 short" Elmar and (b) a 1930 "#5 regular" copy. I'm not good at scientific, pixel-peeping analyses, but I did mount the camera on a table tripod for the two shots below. Both taken @ f/3.5, ISO 320 and 1/250s on the M10M, straight OOC through LR, with no edits. Both lenses have been recently CLA'd and the glass is as good as it gets but, as always with old lenses, sample variation may be a factor. First (a) then (b). Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! The main obvious differences are their respective actual focal lengths (the short one is a bit wider: 49.6 vs. 51.6mm) and the higher contrast of the later version. Not visible here but, interestingly, the short one is less prone to flare than its younger sibling (maybe that's the "Goerz glass magic" 😏) Also, the short one seems a tad "sharper" and might perhaps render OOF areas in a subjectively more pleasing way. Otherwise, I don't see much difference in rendering. I'll post a few more shots with each lens in "The view through older glass" thread. 3
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members!
