Any thoughts on whether Leica at some point will issue a "Elmar-M 35 mm F3.5" similar to what they did with the issuance of the Elmar-M 50 mm F2.8?

No, but I'd buy one in a heart beat. My dear Tessar 35/3.5 would have a competitor at last.

I would rather expect a Summaron 35mm/f3.5n to fit in the line of products. To match the 28mm Summaron for instance. And yes, the schema/build would fit the philosophy of the new generation of lens re-designers.

Thanks Ict:

The same optical core was used for the Elmar-M 50mm f/3.5 (ELMAM / 11110), launched in 1954 together with the Leica M3”.

so this tells me - they bring up the 50mm framelines on a modern M?

I think I will select that BM version (even though I have a spare 50mm adapter).

Is it true the RS is not bettered by the then new Elmar 50mm/F2.8 wide open, even at F4.0? It looks so good with its MTF wide open even if it is just below 90%.

From my own experience, the then new Elmar 50mm/2.8 wide open performs visibly worse than the RS wide open. It does get signifcantly better at f4, so that at f4 the Elmar 50mm/2.8 and the RS in my view have about the same performance.
