About seven or eight years ago I was biking on one of our city's paved bike paths which intersects with streets. I passed a guy who was cruising along kind of slowly and he called out, "Nice day!" as I got just ahead of him. I came to a cross street and the cars were a safe distance away to I peddled across. Several seconds later I heard screeching tires and turned around but didn't see anything so I kept going. When I got home I learned that the sound I heard was the guy I had passed being hit by a car as he crossed the street behind me. He died at the scene. This photo, taken today, shows his bike which was white painted and left by his friends at the intersection. There are a few of these reminders scattered around the city and they're called Ghost Bikes.

Brent,

I was looking at images on your portfolio linked here. Very nice-just took in some of the B&Ws and I recognized the Oregon Coast of course but also a horn player standing outside of what must be Portland State :)

I grew up in Portland but my family moved to Wisconsin when I was 15 and I've been here every since. The horn player you mentioned is actually on the University of Wisconsin campus. I did my under grad study there and stayed in Madison because it's a gorgeous city. The Oregon coast photos were a project I'd wanted to do for a long time as a way to revisit a place I loved as a kid. Fortunately I have enough relatives still in Portland that I visit there often. Is that where you are?

Ah, Madison. I've wanted to visit there since growing up in New York and friends going off to school there would always speak favorably about Madison. I've driven across the country several times but sadly never been through. Years back I sent Leicas nearby to Don Goldberg for repair :)

I live in Bellingham, Washington and I do get to both Portland (and Portland State even whose music building looks similar) and the Oregon coast.

Don Goldberg is a friend of mine and he's been taking care of my Leicas for over 30 years. I've been to Bellingham but it was a long time ago.

Cheers, Brent

At the price, I figure even if I had to replace the 7 Artisans lens annually, I'd still be way ahead. That's doubtful, however, because the lens feels very solid and well constructed.

Let's hear what you have to say in a year or three. Am dubious about QC and longevity in kit priced for recycling when the slightest thing goes wrong.

Personally, I'm more partial to the rendering of the CV 1,2/50.

But, do enjoy.

Yes, time will tell. I agree about the rendering, however, the CV 50/1.2 is considerably heavier and blocks quite a bit more of the viewfinder. The 7 Artisans may well not hold up, but it feels very solid and well made at this point.

Funny that you said, "in a year or three." The focus adjustment instructions that come with the 7 Artisans describe the process and suggest it be tried, "one or three times."

Intriguing; I try to push the button it doesn’t come through yet. Perhaps it needs to be printed large

Otto,

I'm not quite clear, do you mean the image isn't opening here or it's abstraction is intriguing but unclear. I hesitated to say what it was of so folks could just take it as they will.  As far as a large print, I might go back and shoot it at smaller f stop, although the rough hewn edge seems in keeping with Franz Kline....at least I keep telling myself that ;)

My best,

David

I like it, David. Caused me to spend more time looking it at it than I usually do with images online. No idea what it is, but I like it!

Rob, I appreciate that and I for sure need to buy you a pint! Of course that gives me an excuse to get to Edinbrugh one day. If you get over this way, one of our locals on me :)

It is opening. And the abstraction is not the problem either, I like abstract ; it’s more that there is happening a bit too little in the composition.
