FWIW, he did made it clear that a full review was coming in this article, this was just an intro.

I really like this guy's photos and write ups on Leica gear. He has some really good info on the Noctilux f1 versions that I found helpful and his style of reviewing is more in the field than just technical talk.

LLL includes ND4 filter, and a hood with clear protector filter attached.

Here is one that I took over the summer. I don't remember if it was at f/1.2 or f/1.4.

You can get mildly-swirly bokeh out of the lens with a little work (more examples in this post, two are from the LLL 35mm 8e, everything else from the 50mm f/1.2).

Circling back to the matter of onion-ring bokeh, I found out that streetsilhouettes.com did a comparison of the original and the Leica reissue here. There is no discernible artifacts in the bokeh in either of the Wetzlar-made lenses, in the smaller bokeh balls of those review pictures. I can also attest that my own LLL 50mm f/1.2 has the onion-ringing problem. It is markedly more severe than the ones posted above in from that Flickr account, which has some onion-ringing that is not at all problematic, IMO.

With that said, I feel a tad split, because I think that the smidge of sharpness that LLL added to their version does suit the rendering, and without diminishing the "glow" of the original lens. If I won the lottery, of course I would get the Leica reissue, but as it is, I could buy both my Summicron 28mm and the LLL 50mm f/1.2 for the same price.

The onion-ringing of the LLL 50mm f/1.2 can be rather terrible, but after at least a dozen photowalks with it over the last 6 months, it has affected just one of pictures I rather liked (and was fixable in photoshop), so I can't say I regret my decision.

In the end, LLL lets me buy the Leica lenses I've more often used as an EDC, rather than the ones I'd [maybe unreasonably] fawn after, so no one really loses.

Can anyone tell me if the UV filter that is located in the LLL 50/1.2 is removable or not?  I know that it is not a screw in filter (it is a series filter) and I would like to use the lenshood together with the included ND filter but not having two filters on at the same time - thanks - Larry

The UV filter in the hood is removable.

Yes, thanks - it was on very tight and I didn't want to cause any damage, but I have now managed to remove it 😊

Don’t know if anyone still monitors this thread. I’m also having problems unscrewing the LLL 12503 hood to remove the UV filter. Is there a trick to it? I’m afraid I may damage the hood and filter if I apply too much force.

Don't squeeze the hood from opposite sides - that distorts it and can loch the thread. Try "pinching" a spot on one side of the hood and rotate that around. I don't know about this particular hood, but this works on many,

Thanks for posting your comments and pics, Snuff.

Would you be able to let us know - roughly - how much correction is needed to correct the pincusion distortion you mention? I like fast 50mm lenses which exhibit some 'character' when used at Max. Ap. but I really don't like pincushion distortion as a great deal of my snapping contains architectural (etc.) subject-matter. I can accept a small amount of image-loss through some correction and subsequent cropping but having to cope with more than a small amount would be out of the question.

Philip.

There's a Leica Noctilux 50mm/1.2 profile in LR. It corrected more than enough for me. I'm assuming that you are not looking to use this lens for Architecture @ f/1.2, are you? :)
