So ran into a new bug today, after which the freeze occurred. I was taking pictures on film style: Vivid and after the next frame the camera switched by itself to BW Monochrome high contrast and after a couple of frames there was a freeze. Then after ten minutes the freeze happened again.

- Not using profiles. Only one main one.
- Power Saving mode: 60min
- Card: SanDisk Extreme Pro 200MB/S

Let me remind you that I also have freezes without SD card. I will try again to use without the card and turn off Power Saving mode: Off

I talked to a friend who also has M11 and he said it became a brick after frequent freezes:
- Yes, I had it happen a lot until it totally died...had to have it replaced by Leica.

Don't take it personally @Alexis M but you have 15 posts on the LUF so far, all dedicated to your M11 issues. Don't you think it is time to ask Leica for a refund or a replacement?

I've already written them an email. So far I have not received a reply. There is a problem, I bought the camera in Ukraine, where the war is now. now I am in Spain. The box stayed with me. The seller was an unofficial store in Ukraine. So I don't see yet how it can be done. Any ideas?

I'm a bit confused. Yesterday you wrote

"

I have this response:

We are aware the M11 (firmware 1.6) can freeze.
Our developers are working on fixing the issue via a firmware update.
If you notice any pattern in the occurrences or any settings that the freezes occur more often with, please do let us know.

Best regards,

"

I guess that this email was just asking about the bug, but you then followed up with another email requesting a repair?

Yes, because after their letter I had a serious shoot where the camera didn't work correctly. I decided to write again. Waiting for new firmware is good, but if it will be in 3-4 months?

I was watching your posts for a while and it seems you are the only person who doesn’t experience freeze up issue and is willing to attest it.

you mind if telling us what’s the manufactured date on the grey box and the test certificate? I’m kind of starting to form a theory that the issue is correlated to the date of manufacture

That's a bit rich. Yesterday you wouldn't tell me how many freezes you'd had :)

I also haven't had any problems and my M11 is about 7 weeks old.

I had freeze for almost two months every shoot. That's why I ended up on this forum. I did nothing before, because I was sure that with the release of the firmware 1.6 it will be fixed.

Update on my part:

Since I removed the SD card (was using the Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS-I 200Mb/s) and set Lens Detection to Off a few days ago, I haven't experienced a freeze (maybe turned it on and off ~30 times during that time). Will continue to use it without SD card and Lens Detection off for a while, then will add Lens Detection (to manual M for my Voigtlander lenses) after.

Maybe it really was the SD card that was causing my freezes, but it was a different body so cannot be sure, and I had a freeze or 2 without SD card on the old body.

Will maybe get a Delkin Black UHS-II in the future if I still don't get any freeze in a month.

I have experienced freeze issues before firmware update 1.6 but i fixed them by using exclusively UHS-I cards (Sandisk 170 mb/s). After F.U. 1.6, i got a couple freezes with one UHS-II card (Sandisk 300 mb/s) but i fixed them by updating my user profiles. Since then i've got zero freeze issue with the same UHS-II card. BTW i got my M11 in April 2022 and the test certificate is dated 2022/03/22. Too bad for the secret fix theory i'm afraid :D.

Thanks for the update. And Power saving mode you turned to OFF?

Yes both Off but I had them off on my old body as well as the new body and they were freezing a lot. My freezes happened at startup, not wake up.

Lens Detection On is to be avoided with uncoded lenses because the camera hunts to ID the lens unless it has an previous lens profile in memory. Better solutions are Lens Detection Off, as you lastly did, or better so hand code your uncoded lenses if you can. This way they will be recognized as coded lenses and you can keep Lens Detection On for all your lenses normally.

I’m using manual M, not Auto but as we already discussed on this forum, lens detection is never truly off.

I was not clear enough then. If i set Lens Detection to Off it will stay off as long as the camera has no lens profile in memory. Now if i enter a lens profile manually, say a 50/2, the camera will believe that the next uncoded lens, a 135/4 for example, is still a 50/2. To avoid this, as i suggested above, i will set Lens Detection to Off or, better so, i will hand code uncoded lenses so that Lens Detection can stay set to Auto for all of them.

I found mine froze when I fiddled some button too quickly. For example, after turning on the camera, I instantly switched to live view mode, and boom it's frozen.

I can reproduce this almost 80% of the time. I guess Leica wants us to take things slow?

I am actually not kidding you guys. I had same experience with my 3-year-old Q2, I am kind of impatient person, e.g. I took a picture with Q2 and less than a second later I pressed some button to play back or bring up the menu while the red-light was still flashing, then boom froze it went the Q2.

I guess I had to learn taking things slow...... :)

I can see that, I saw that too a. few times, especially on the q2 . you got to slowdown.

it is like using photoshop on a 20 year old laptop , Click and wait 20 min to refresh

On the Q2 this is 100% related to an SD card issue. In my case, it was Sony Tough cards that caused the red light + button press interference freezing.

With the M11, who knows. Since changing out SD cards doesn't work for most people with the freezes, it may be the SD card controller on the main board or something like that, IDK.

Leica does apparently. See:

I read it this way:

"...Our developers are hoping they can fix the issue via a firmware update. [retranslated:] Also, if you have any ideas of what the problem is, please let us know because we are currently at a loss."

this Sony SD card are problem in many cameras, on Leica they don't work.

but the Q2 was slow to write to SD card until the firmware double the speed.

But the Q2 was always a slow camera , small buffer. got this reason Greg uses 2 side by side. Small camera great results.

that seam just speculation.  sometime software is complex and hard to reproduce, that is why they want people to submit the steps.

I know some Group are more vocal than others. since I am just a simple use I am not going to pretend to know, but most people don't have freezing issues. My M11 is now over 1 year in my hands and the last issue I had was one time in LV back in November . All and all not so bad, and I use the camera everywhere .
