I reported earlier that my new MP BP (Jan 23) did not scratch a sacrificial film I ran through with the back both open and closed.
I have just received back from the processors the first roll of film I have used in anger (Portra 800). I digitised it myself with the SL2-S (i.e. no ICE scratch removal). No sign of scratches on the negatives or in the images; exposures look good, as does focusing, though most images were not particularly sensitive to focusing.

I received my new black paint MP in January. Works great, I have run a couple rolls through and checked the unprocessed film, and a couple rolls of TMX that I processed myself no trouble at all. What a relief..

What was the date on the sticker on the documentation?

I'm going to start a rumour that this piece of metal is made of zinc. 😈

That would be funny but they actually use a 1 Deutsche Mark coin! Apparently someone found a bag full of them when they were moving factories. They tried to repurpose them as battery covers but it was cheaper to make new ones from scratch and then when they had the idea for the M-A, they were talking about casting a new body when someone remembered the coins and stuck one over the hole and the rest is history!

Actually they use Gold Sovereigns as they are closer to the diameter than Deutsche Marks..

Incidentally, I've seen it claimed that the slot in the button cell battery cover of manual focus Nikon SLRs is sized to accept a 1 Yen coin as a 'screwdriver'. These coins are worth less than a penny, so for my next dodgy ebay scheme I'm going to get a few  hundred from the bank and sell them on as 'authentic Nikon battery cover openers'. Does $10 each (+ p&p) sound reasonable?

I have just been informed that Leica does not have the parts in stock to repair my brand new 2022 M6:

Dear Leica Customer,

During the repair of your Leica product, the technician found that a

part required to fully repair your equipment to Leica standards is

currently out of stock.

Our colleagues and worldwide suppliers are working together to resolve

this issue as quickly as possible. However, this will most likely delay

the completion of the repair.

We apologize for the inconvenience and sincerely appreciate your

patience.

Remember the BS that was spouted when this camera was first released, as to how Leica was now making its own parts? Yeah, sure they are.

I have asked for a refund, we'll see how that goes.

The interesting tid bit about Leica acknowledging the fault is due to a batch of defective pressure plates, is that it means other new M6s out there also scratch film.  Depending on what batch their pressure plate is from.

When a whole batch of defective pressure plates makes it through to production cameras, it shows their QA process has failed.

They were able to recreate the scratching.

Bad pressure plates, who'd have thunk it? 😐😑🤐

Ask them if they can just use the original M6 pressure plates. Surely they have those in stock.

Maybe they will finally buy a few 100' rolls of film to start checking for scratching as part of their final inspection. They should include the strip of film they tested it with and staple it to the warranty card.

Maybe you could request that the repair be carried out to someone  else's standards.  You haven't had very good luck with Leica's standards so far.

My recently bought M6 also scratched the backside of the film. The sales staff was quite uncomfortable with this incident. Since they still had a second copy in stock, they exchanged the camera without any discussion. Unfortunately the second copy has also a defective pressure plate and scratches the film. Kindly, the sales staff decided to refund my money since they don't have another one in stock at the moment. Both cameras have 2023/01/23 listed as production date.

Well, this puts to rest the claim that it is only the vocal few that have issues, while the vast majority who do not are unheard from.

Leica has stated that a batch of pressure plates is defective.  When my camera was returned from the first attempted fix, the pressure plate had indeed been replaced. But it was replaced by another defective one! From the same batch the original one came from.

If I had a  new M6 and think it doesn't scratch the film - I'd check it again.  Actually look at your negatives.

Ok, here's the glass half full part.  At least now Leica has identified that the problem exists, and the cause of the problem.

Now how long will it take to get correctly manufactured pressure plates?

This is all interesting since people have posted about issues for a while now. Maybe they've receiving batches but they're not organizing them by date or haven't since it sounds like they're out of stock. So there could have been a bad batch or two (even a year, two years ago) that's just mixed in with other non-scratching pressure plates and it's luck of the draw who receives a scratcher. At least this seems to have shed light on it and hopefully they can easily correct it going forward.

I wonder if a batch of defective pressure plate causes the issue. My MP manufactured in 2019 also scratches film and I’ve just sent it back to Leica. Still waiting for a confirmation. I got my camera during COVID lockdown so I tried local repair shops first (the reputable ones) and they couldn’t fix it even by replacing the pressure plate.

And here’s an example of the scratches I have had for 3 years on all of my films.
