M film cameras are so nice, they are the only cameras that I often just sit there, and work them even without film in them just to feel the mechanics.

All I want for Christmas the New Year, is my M6 back and working correctly.

I just finished a test roll of TMY no problem with shutter tried every speed speed from 1/8 up to 1/1000th. Changing the shutter and aperture. Every frame looks like it got the "same" exposure.

I wonder if Wetzlar folks never stopped partying after Oktoberfest 🤔

There may be an obvious explanation for film scratching that everyone has overlooked - do not attempt to use both media types simultaneously (see 1:55):

Amazing.
His professional review of the Nikon F3 with the Noctilux for low light photography is very…enlightening as well.

Leica was fast. Got my new M6 today. Doesn't scratch. Claus Walter from Foto Walter, the best Leica shop in Germany, helped me and a short time later the new M6 arrived. Excellent !

10 ok, 5 not

I have not included the 2 M-As, because this was meant to be an M6 thread!  Even though we have added MPs..

Ah, right…. The MA is better quality all-around than it’s siblings. Understandable….

Other issues popping up on Reddit…

Er, what am I looking at? Something that is covered by the base plate?

First pic is his with the 'issue' circled.  Next ones are my M-A, M7 and MP.  I have no idea what the issue is.  As well as the fact that the base plate covers up this area.

That’s sounds arbitrary which means it’s got no value. I’m out.

I guess you missed the title of the thread.  That’s ok, keep ur head in the sand.

edit - to make it easy for you to keep up as math seems complicated,  10 ok, 5 not.

including M-A - 12 ok, 5 not.

Hmmm...it occurs to me that film scratching might be simply a matter of a few (or one) unhappy employee intentionally sabotaging some cameras.  This sort of thing is not unheard of.  Of course, Leica employees are surely pleased with their work/wages and such dissatisfaction could never happen, right? 😏

Hello All,

Just received my first Leica camera (a silver MP, purchased new from Rangefinder) this past week. While waiting for some gear to come in and the weather to clear up, I was perusing the forums and saw some of the issues regarding new MPs & the new M6 scratching film. I decided to sacrifice a roll (ended up being 2) of Ilford HP5 this morning to see whether I would also have similar issues.

Unfortunately it does look like there is some scratching that is occurring. Here is some information about what I am experiencing:

  • I inserted a new roll, advanced through all frames, and then rewound/removed the first roll
  • Upon inspection I noticed a single line running horizontally throughout the entire roll of film (on the non-emulsion side, and on the "top" of the roll of film, assuming the camera is oriented in a normal position)
  • Before trying again, I used a lens cleaning wipe to gently wipe down the pressure plate (did not feel any snagging), and then used a rocket air blaster to ensure there wasn't any dust, etc.
  • I inserted a second (new) roll (also HP5), this time only advancing through frame 5, and then rewound/removed the second roll
  • The second roll has the same line and stops (where I presume frame 5 ended)

To troubleshoot:

  • I tried using a (clean) microfiber cloth and did not feel any consistent snagging (I think the fibers may have caught on the screw heads a couple times, but nothing that was replicated each pass)
  • I used a jeweler's loupe (3x and 10x magnification) to check each screw and they do all appear to be recessed properly

I have been reading through the thread "My brand new 2022 M6 scratches the film" and am going to check around and see if I can locate any specks of paint, etc. that may be causing this issue as well. Since this is my first analog camera, I'm not sure whether this scratching will even show up on a developed roll or not (it appears to be very fine). I have a few pictures that I can share, but will need to post them individually due to the forum file size restrictions per post.

I have already reached out to Alex to get his thoughts, but am happy to shoot a roll of film and have it developed locally to see if this actually presents a problem or not (on the negatives or scans, which I would plan to do at home using my OMDS OM-1 & 60mm macro lens). I may be paranoid about something extremely minor, but would rather get insight from those much more experienced than I am given it is a fairly sizable investment for a piece of gear.

Thank you in advance for your time!

Here is a picture of the scratch in relation to the film (it runs the entire length, but I could only have the light reflect on a small portion):

Here is a picture of the scratch taken through a 10x loupe held on the end of my iPhone (12 Pro Max) using the 2.5x zoom lens. The image is very soft overall, but I think does highlight how fine the scratch itself is (when not having bright lights overhead reflected from it in just the right way, as per my previous photo).

Luckysquirell’s new MP is a film scratcher.  Now counting all new film Ms because williamj will otherwise think there is a conspiracy here.

12 ok, 6 not.

33% failure rate.
