Hi All - I searched the forum but I couldn't find a definitive answer.

I just got a brand new M11 and I am trying to charge it using the USB-C port of a 2016 MacBook Pro 15inch. This doesn't seem to work for whatever reason and I was wondering if any of you had any luck or if my camera is defective. The camera charges fine by using the laptop USB power brick when connected directly to the wall plug and to the M11 USB port.

So the issue is Mac usb-c port-->M11.

I have used the supplied usb cable, a normal usb-c to usb-c cable as well as a certified thunderbolt cable usb-c cable and it doesn't work with either of them.

Your comments are greatly appreciated.

Leica SL2S charges with all sort of devices, a marvel. For some odd reasons the M11 is not able. Perhaps the size increment of the SL2S is all to do with this?

Jokes apart it is a little disappointing and, alongside other glitches, spoils such a cool and lovely product.

Leica SL2 will not be able to charge from a USB port that is not designed for charging.

Are you saying that you can charge your SL2 using the ports on your MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016)?

Edit: the new Hasselblad X2D seems also to need a Thunderbolt/USB 4 for charging, like M11. It seems that the new cameras require chargers with USB-PD technology.

Well I think you can blame apple for that, in 2016 models not all USB-c ports provide enough power when computer runs on battery and when computer has other devices attached.

Your best bet is to use the port next to the power port, the other side is like a hub and does not have the same power.

The new MacBook Pro 16 from 2021 charges the M11 and SL2 just fine, it is still slow and the only benefit is that it can be tether to capture one and still keep the battery working longer.

You should be able to charge from any MacBook USB-C port. The M11 is max 7W, so 5V, 1.4A; this is the low-level USB-A/C charging ranges. If you can charge your phone, you *should* be able to charge the M11. I think Leica has some PD-style firmware shenanigans going on that has to do with all the various USB-c modes the various M11 models variable support. It seems the common denominator is they want full cable-availability for transferring files etc., so if you connect to computer (with PTP enabled) then it is just going to mount like a camera, and won't draw charge. Made for iPhone mode seems to not do anything of use, since FOTOS wants PTP. However, I have tried enabling that to see if I could trick it into charging, alas, no.

The charger works fine with a MacBook 14" M2 Pro. I haven't tested the charging time because I just take the one MacBook adapter  when I travel, and it's a universal one.

I spoke a bit too soon. I happen to have a few thunderbolt cables around. I currently have my M11, on, in PTP mode, and connected to my MacBook Pro 14" (M4), and it is charging without fuss.

So, assuming this topic still has some juice in it, I would love to hear other's experiences with thunderbolt cables. I bet the "FOTOS" cable that comes with the Q will work, if anyone has an M11 and Q. I don't happen to have my cable around. My M11 came with the lightning FOTOS cable, and frankly it has never done anything whatsoever.

I also confirmed thunderbolt cable will charge my wife's M11 Monochrom while connected to computer. I have tried every thunderbolt 3 and 4 cable I have (about 12) and they all work.

I am on the latest (as of date of post Oct 25) firmware on both M bodies tried.

Your mileage may vary, but it would make some sense if there is an effort to preserve data transmission over a USB3.1 cable, that a thunderbolt cable would have overhead since it can do the 3.1/2 transport in addition to other things.

Worth a shot!

thanks! I was hoping I could leave home the charger when travelling but not a big issue.

What cable are you using. All cables are not created equal!

my m11 charges from my 3 month old MacBook Air

are you not bringing a charging brick for your MacBook Pro? Plug you usb c cable into that to charge the camera
