Does a Sony A7R V make sense as a second body alongside my SL2-S?

why buy a Q2 now in Dec '22 when a Q3 with a completely different sensor is probably gonna come out before march '23?

well, it depends.

What does the Q2 now doesnt have that you like ?

I would be perfectly happy in buying a Q2 Ghost new (its gorgeous ) or a mint Q2 now, knowing that in 3 or 4 months a new Q3 will emerge.

Nothing wrong with the Q2 as it is - and I wouldnt necessary welcome more megapixels ( 47 is enough ) from a lightweight, grab and shoot camera.

But thats me, everyone millage may vary.

For me, the biggest advantage of the upcoming Q3 is it likely having a Stacked BSI CMOS sensor - similar to the M11.

The Q2 is great, but having an extra stop or 2 of low light sensitivity would be nice.

BTW I like your selection of Leica M lenses.

Nitpicking: M11 does not have a stacked BSI CMOS sensor but "only" a BSI sensor.

P.S.: The linked article is wrong. BSI by itself does not give you noticeable noise improvement at FF sensor size.

I just wanted to thank you all for your generous advice. In the end I will order the Sony with the 24mm and 50mm GM, and a profoto A10. I have got a good deal with over 900€ of discounts in total. I didn't mention that I also have a Ricoh GRiii (an absolute joy to slip into a pocket), and I feel the Sony is much more versatile and, with the 24mm lens, really a pretty perfect street photo setup. I also baulk at the idea of buying the Q2 so close to the Q3 release.

You guys have been really helpful.

Enjoy your Sony adventure! A7rV + GM 24/1.4 and GM 50 F1.2 is a premium kit in the Sony line up and looks like you grabbed some serious savings on your purchase too👍🏼. As I wrote previously I think the Leica+Sony make for both a very capable and interesting pair. If you haven't already, checkout Mark Galer's YouTube video "Sony A7rV Camera review" for  good overall intro to all the new features. Once the various editing apps catch up and load the new camera's profile it should be interesting project to compare to your SL2-S output.

I occasionally use the A7RIV + GM 24/1.4 combo.  Works really well but definitely NOT compact.  FWIW an advantage of using the 60MP sensor is that you can set it to APSC and get 24MP with an effective lens focal length cropped to 36mm.

I had a Sony Alpha set up, moved to Sony SL, which was a much more pleasurable shooting experience, upgraded to the SL2 and some Summicrons, but injured myself so went back to the Sony system for weight reasons.  The SL lenses seem to be a cut above even the GM lenses (absence of aberrations).  There is a reasonable spread of L-mount lenses now, although the E-mount is probably still the winner in that respect.  Exception: Great as the 50mm f1.2 GM is, the rendering of the SL Summilux is more attractive (for portraits, in particular) even if I don't think that the optical quality is quite as good as the GM.  The Sony system has much better AF than the SL, but if you don't need that the SL2 or Panasonic S1R produce great pictures and, I prefer the Leica lens rendering.   Ideally I would have only one system, as trying to use flashes, etc, is a pain.

Unless you are a Leica purist and only swear by brand loyalty the answer is a hard yes.
I use Sony (for AF), Fujifilm (for digital medium format shots), Canon (for portability) and Mamiya RZ (for analog medium format shots & character) alongside Leica.

@Al Browncan you add a comment regarding Canon and portability? I find Canon cameras quite big and bulky... I'm interested in small AF options and Sony seems right now the only valid option (on paper😊).

Again, I was in that "camp" already - and I switched to the SL2 - nothing, but really NOTHING wrong going there.

I adore the 24mm 1.4 GM, its a absolute gem of lens - one of Sony best. If you do portraits, please, get the best Sony lens ever ( and I've used them all ) : 135mm GMaster. Its sublime.

Its comparable to Hasseblad 100mm or Fuji 110mm and I had them.

Sony system is still top dog when it comes to AF and has a mature , well priced ( for what it is ) and great selection of lenses.

I'm sure you will love it !

From my side a clear "no".
I sold my Sony a7 because of its outcoming ugly and yellowish look. Instead I bought a Sigma FP with its great and better sensor, and always the 45mm (and less the 20mm) contemporary on it. The M-lenses on Sigma make no real sense if you are able to touch the display in combination with Sigma lens like an iPhone. For always going out that small combination is great. Sometimes I use it with the eView finder (I can also screw it away if too big). Both Sigma lenses I can also use on my SL (SL has a following AF) when needed (mostly not). But my standard combination and for going out in Munich events is my SL with Summilux-R 35mm on Leica R-Adapter (sometimes plus the 80mm).
Less is more – "Die Kunst liegt im Weglassen" 😉

an example of the cool look from Sigma FP similar to Leica SL – for me it matches better to the Leica look

The A1 is overkill for me. I never shoot video, I hate the update process on that system (only via clunky desktop software) and in many ways I feel that the A7R V has taken the best parts of the A1 and actually improved the things I would use more (AF, MPs, screen etc).

Sony A7RV may have some newer AI algorithm for AF than A1, but if you need sheer autofocus speed -especially tracking and blackout free continuous shooting A1 is still much much better than any other Sony camera. A7R-series has always been about the resolution, not the  speed.

I simply grew tired of using two systems.  It was fun for a while, but then I forgot a memory card from in the the mix up and then missed a menu change in one when a sudden shot appeared.   That was it for me.  It just wasn't practical for me to keep two systems.  I feel like a am free again.  Simple.
