Your Biggest Goof With a Leica

I was in La Alberca, Salamanca, Spain (worth a visit, BTW) a few years ago being asked to photograph my girlfriends niece's baptism. It was as a favor. Oh yeah, I was prepared with my Noct' and 1600 Fuji color film, as the church is dark. Well, I had previously taken the 1600 out for daytime shooting and forgot to mark the leader for plus one reload. Yep, I reloaded the film and the result were "beautiful" double exposures, DOH! You should have seen the look on our faces when the prints came back. It was quite clear both sets were keepers. There were no other photographers, as flash was not allowed. I was the most disappointed person. The parents liked them enough to keep them.

When I'm using my M6 I normally rewind the film even if I'm not going to put a new film in the camera straight away. I was once distracted and forgot to do that and of course opened the bottom a couple of minutes after I'd finished the film. Managed to salvage some of the frames though.

I had to read the instruction book once because a new in box R9 came toggled to mirror lock up and it was getting on for dusk (hence half minute odd exposures) and which all added up to what the heck is this dead or alive when I got the camera out of the box on the way home. Fortunately I had a 6.2 with me at the time. You know even with the aid of a screwdriver and a knife I have never been able to get the pop up flash to work on the front of the MP. Damned if I can make the AF work. Maybe I shoud read the instructions.

Rob, LOL!

Steve, mine's essentially the same as yours - though with an R9 - simply trying to take out a finished film without first rewinding it. But I didn't have the excuse of being distracted - I just did it. Fortunately the self-shielding of the wound film (on the take-up spool) limited the number of lost frames, but oh the self-emarrassment!

Actually John I think my biggest goof with a Leica was not getting one years before I finally did. Not sure if that counts or not <grin>

Steve, don't be too hard on yourself - hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Last month I loaded my M6 with 3200, stuck the 75 Lux on the front and went out into the night excited that, with this combo, my Leica would be able to take photos in almost total darkness.

I forgot I would be unable to focus in darkness. The results were 'soft' to say the least

My biggest goof has been to not get the film leader set in the MP and consequently shot a wedding ceremony without film. First time taught me a good lesson to check the wind-on, the third time I did it, well ....... LOL.

Fortunately, my trusty M3 was in service on all occasions and there was no problem in providing a set of images.

Why is film loading on the M3 never a problem :-? Ha.

No one's mentioned it yet It's particular to Ms. Left the lens cap on for a whole series of shots, mid roll. The camera was already set right for the light so I simply blazed away. Got the prints back from the lab. Where the hell are those pics of the gorgeous sexy smiling bikini girls at the beach? The ones where they were playing up for the camera? The ones I took when mum and the kids strolled off to buy lunch? Let me check the negs. Oh, sh*t! 10 or so black frames. And they were so hot!

I have not done that again. Haven't left the lens cap on again either. :(

1) left red filter on the lens after shooting B&W film, then switched to colour.

2) Didn't check to see that the film leader was properly set so I 'shot' a whole roll. Didn't check to see if the rewind crank was moving.

3) Forgot to set the ISO dial after shooting Ilford 3200...and loading Velvia 50 afterwards. Duh. Grrr....

... Try to remember collapsible Elmars need to be "un-collapsed" :o Mark

... but it makes such a beautiful, fuzzy-white circle when collapsed!

Besides all the above over many years, my best trick was dropping a just detached 50cron in fine beach sand.

Goofs repeated by others:

1. Opening loaded camera

2. Selling, when I should have kept

New goofs:

1. Wearing a jacket with a metal zipper - scratched the heck out of the back of a black chrome camera

2. Putting a black chrome M on the same shoulder as a no-brand camera bag - more scratching from the bag's zippers

3. Forgetting to use backlight compensation when using auto

4. Dropping newly-acquired camera with no strap - ruined Canon 50/1.2

5. Buying an M3 as a gift for a long-lost friend, and having it rejected

6. Using rechargeable 123A in SF-20 - didn't read the voltage output

7. Orally blowing dust out of an open M8, and getting saliva spots on the closed shutter

8. Not having a spare pair of batteries with me for the meter - died mid-parade

9. Not buying M4-2 gold, M6 titanium, 50/1.2 noct when opportunity presented itself

10. Not getting used return policy in writing from unreputable seller at camera show

11. Putting Leica lens holder on bottom of black chrome M - more scratches and wear

12. Buying an M8 not in person, and going through 3 months of returns for a damaged "new' camera

Does this put me on probation from the SPC-M (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to M's)? At a minimum, I better lock up my pretties, and get more practice with my battle-axe M7.

Actually my worst was standing up when a sailing dinghy gyped unexpectedly - exit one M4 and Summicron 50 (fortunately insured.)

Second worst: dropping an M4-2 in front of a city bus in Johannesburg -I just got off the plane and didn't realize they drive on the same silly side of the road as the Brits do :p- bump-bump-bump a three axled bus, three wheels over the camera. Rf out of whack and a dent, but the photographs came out all right once I figured out how far out it was and again insurance :)

What a horrible thread - I'm remembering all disasters - leaving my camera case unlocked at the lobby of the Norfolk in Nairobi - minus one pair of Leica binoculars.

Leaving an R5 body in back-zippered pocket of a backpack when walking through Schiphol airport - insurance again

Need I go on? :(

Using a hand-held meter with a perfectly functioning M6, then when the meter battery died started guessing exposures rather than remember that the M6 has a built-in meter. (This was in very low light and occurred just as I moved to a brand new scene indoors.)

Just walking towards the Howden dam in the Derbyshire Peak District and seeing Lancaster flying up the valley. Too great a shot to miss, set aperture and hyperfocal distance, wait, wait, perfect... lens cap on and fumbling to remove it lost the picture.

Other mistake was selling my M4 and lenses 25+ years ago (to finance being a student - well the extra curricular activities) and not buying another M until this year.
