One on my M9s has a fairly bad dent. I've got used to and would probably actually find it slightly disconcerting if I got it repaired (which I won't because the cost of a replacement top plate is far too high anyway to simply get rid of a dent) and it no longer looked like it does. Equipment which is used gets wear and tear for many reasons. I really wouldn't worry about it providing it works ok.

I agree, now I'm thinking it's just adding to the character of an old camera. 👍

@Topsy Sorry to hear about your M9's accident - a dreadful incident!

When you sens it in to have the rangefinder recalibrated, you could have the top plate replaced if there is a black M9 top plate on hand.

Just a thought...

Thanks @Herr Barnack but I won't be sending it anywhere for recallibration I did that myself the other day and it's fine now. I'll just live with the reminder of how clumsy I was.

It's sods law. I bought a new turntable recently and put a record on to make sure it was working OK. I didn't realise the antiskate wasn't set up and it promptly scratched the record which happens to be a hard to find and expensive recording! On top of that the scratch affected only 2 tracks, which were of course my favourites on the album.

I will forever be reminded of my bad luck when I listen to that album!

Some years ago I was quoted around the €700 mark for a replacement top plate. Dents aren’t worth that much to me

Oh, that’s interesting. Two years ago I dropped my Leica M9 and send it to Leica for a check plus a new top plate of the M9-P. I just looked up the bill from Leica, and I had to pay 390,- € for the top plate and about 25 € for the work. Let’s add 19% taxes we get something about 494,- Euro.

That’s not cheap, but I wouldn’t call it Leica-expensive either.

No but given that mine is now working fine still a waste of money for a dent although an M9-P top plate sounds interesting/tempting.

That is indeed torture, If I didn't already have 3 M9s I would look seriously at that one. Oh the pain...................... Are 4 too many???????????????

An a fourth one could soon be available from my Leica dealer in Montreal Canada! T'was mine until a few days ago; I traded it with all my film Ms (3, 4 and 6)for new stuff fo my SL2 (keeping my M-P 240). In perfect condition! It should show up sometime at https://www.camtecphoto.com/fr/collections/leica-demos-doccasion-etc The M4 there used to be mine, bought new with a50 Summicron for about $400 Canadian back in 1969.

Plus the cost and time away for fitting etc, tempting but not tempting enough............. 🤞

Isn’t it a few screws and a ribbon cable?

If it were me… I think I’d get it and keep it for a rainy day… you obviously love the M9 (no argument here!) and have 3, they seem to be forever cameras for you, and spares will get harder to find, more expensive and likely less mint over time

reddot also have a base plate for a hundred

You make a good point Adam and I will look again but since I am now retired but not yet old enough to draw my state pension I have to think hard about these kind of purchases. Like I say though you do make a good point. 👍
