Overall these lenses probably have exactly the same mass

A couple of grammes indeed !

In my book I noted some weights:

- Summicron III, serial 2 51x xxx 200g no hood or caps

- Summicron IV serial 3 303 xxx 196g !

SOMNI (DR Summicron) n° 1 763 xxx , 304g nude, plus close device = 357g

The version III optical cell can be (unscrewed) used with SOMKY

if we add UOORF ring

The wiki info for the 50mm Summicron ver. 1 has several egregious errors. The most serious is lumping the (ver 2) rigid & DR  in with the collapsible and calling them all ver. 1 (which results in the ver. 3 lens being called ver 2 !!!)

That page also implies that the collapsible is 4 elements in 4 groups !

I really wish somebody would fix this.

Hi @a.noctilux, I remember that you have the Summicron 50 Jahre version of v5 in 'Rigid' body.  Do you think it is the same size as the original rigid shown here ?     oh, and did you make a note of weight in that notebook please ? :D

Cheers

Graham

Graham,

of course,

so the 50Th Anniversary (11615) is 260g

Summicron II (Rigid) n° 1 956 xxx 251g

I don't have pic of the two, sorry but just compare them, exactly same size, and the focus ring is few millimeters larger on Rigid.

From what I’ve read here people like the v3. Usually those who shoot film.

For the M10R I’m very happy with the v5 (and v4 I’ll lump it here since it’s the same optically). The v5 is soft at f2-f2.8. Little more perfect from f4 and by f8 is pretty perfect. I don’t find the IQ “boring”. Only if you take boring pictures.

Maybe the APO could be described as sterile and boring. But not the v5 Cron. IMO Leica’s best 50.

But that’s the good thing about 50’s. There’s one for everyone.

You are right.

I'd add that one 50 Summicron is not enough 👍.

I don' count them any more, number changes so often...

50mm Summicron v.3 is my new best friend.

Light, compact, no focusing tab to get in the way. Just a touch of glow around bright light sources, but I love the way the moderate contrast "wraps the light around" subjects in backlight.

Grace adding her artworks to inventory at the Gallery, 50mm Summicron v.3 at f/2.0, M10P B&W conversion. (click to enlarge for best resolution(

I've had my v3 since 1969, and while it can flare in some conditions, overall it is an excellent lens. It was the first M version designed to balance contrast & resolution, and so can have more "apparent" sharpness than the earlier models. It is very similar optically to the v1 Summicron R that preceded it. The R version can also flare dramatically. I have used teh v3 lens head on close focus adapters made for the v2 Ridgid model - so the thread is the same.

Here is the side-by-side picture of the two: 50 Rigid (black) and 50th Anniversary (chrome).

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello.  I haven't used my 50 crons (v3 and v4) much recently as I've been using my 50:1.4 v3 a lot.

However, last weekend I took my v4 (tabbed) on a weekend trip.   And today I took the v3 out for the day.

As a mostly-analogue shooter, on digital I am far more drawn to the images from the v3  .... I just love this lens !

Ok now, let's get to the topic, Summicron 50 V3 (here in Hong Kong, we called them high leg)

BTW, I've been meaning to ask where the "High leg" nickname comes from?

Three(III)-phase power connections? Skimpy bathing suits?
