Hi fellow members,

I am going on a trip to Thailand and Malaysia soon, will bring few rolls of film with me, in case if I need to buy some over there, does anyone here in this forum knows where to buy and recommend a lab for processing?  Thanks

James,

I am heading to Vietnam and Thailand next month and planning on traveling with my M4 and about twenty rolls of film so I am also interested in the replies.  I am not sure I have the courage these days to leave the digital at home but if so it will be a X100F as I sold my Leica digital last year.

My first time in Bangkok was in 1980 (port of call after time on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific) over Xmas and I think I photographed the Royal Palace with a Leica M4-2 and Kodachrome.  I was back in Thailand several times in the early 1980's working from another aircraft carrier.  In fact, I had to lead a flight of three CH46's to the US Embassy in Bangkok to pick up VIP's and take them out to the USS New Jersey.  I was in Bangkok again in 2010 with my daughter and I think I was using an M9.  The colors and the street food vendors were the same as I remember from 1980.  Have been to SE Asia (Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia)several times since 2010 but never Vietnam so this trip will correct that as well as get me out of an Alaskan winter for a month.

I don't mind not having a digital M anymore but I sure miss Kodachrome!

Wasnt there a poster on rangefinderforum who had a really long thread on his images from that region?  IIRC he was a teacher there and took a lot of pics w his M6.  He would be a great resource re film labs.  He also introduced us to Kodak ProImage 100 which at that time was not sold in the US!

Memories of flogging around Bangkok airspace trying to locate the US Embassy while trying to decipher the Thai air traffic controller's English knowing I had a hard time over the USS NEW JERSEY.  What fun!  Normally, the UH1N (Huey) was used for VIP missions but the NEW JERSEY had a flight deck made from teak and they would not let skid equipped aircraft land on it.  Thus, the CH46 which had wheels was suddenly used for hauling VIP's instead of its normal load of cargo or Marine grunts.

All of the countries in SE Asia are great in their own way.  I missed the Vietnam War by being two years too young and I am so glad I did.  I served in the Marines as a pilot from 1975-1986 followed by 21 years of chasing drug smugglers for US Customs.  Flying was definitely better than working for a living.

And I still miss Kodachrome!

By the way, googling "Film Labs Bangkok" brings up about a dozen labs including some run by film photographers.  I have no idea of the quality of their work.

And yes Huss, I remember his photos.  I think he lived in Bangkok so I will search "rangefinder forum" and see what I can find.

Hello,

In Bangkok, try google map "Mega Plaza Saphan Lek".  5th floor of the building is a place for second hand film and digital camera and accessories.  It's near China town and old town area.

Frame It:  Thanks for all the links.  I will be spending all of this trip in Vietnam (originally thought of traveling to another country in SE Asia) and leaving digital (FujiX100f) at home.  I will still have my iPhone.

As much as I prefer film (it is what I have been using since 1966), there is a allure to technology which is hard to leave behind.   But film only using an M4 with 15/35/90.  The 15 is new but hope it sees much use in the streets of Hanoi and Saigon.
