Lens hood for 28/2.8 asph

I am confused, what is wrong with the supplied hood? I have this lens and hood and find the supplied hood just perfect. The round vented hoods are cool looking, but they still intrude into the viewfinder far more than the very small hood supplied with the lens, which just barely intrudes into the viewfinder. I have had no problems with the supplied hood staying on at all, and the hood cap works fine. There is no cap for the round vented hood, unless you reverse it, a real pain.

...Does this hood also reduce the total size footprint (i.e. length) of the lens, compared to the 28 hood? Also, does a standard E39 cap fit when the 50 hood is in place?

Yes and yes. Reduces the overall length of the lens + hood by about 5 mm if you don't use any filter, otherwise the reduction is only a bit less than 1 mm.

Not a big deal IMHO given that the 12550 is a very little hood that is not much usefull in my experience with 50mm lenses at least.

Never used it with the Elmarit 28/2.8 asph though and better it than no hood at all of course provided it does not cause vignetting with and w/o IR-cut filter.

A shorter and more effective combo would be the collapsible rubber hood of the Summicron-C 40/2 #12518 and its snap-on cap #14191 (right) if one don't screw the hood too tight on the lens, because its 0.75 filter thread is not the same as that of the lens (0.5 i guess).

I don't know if it vignettes with film Ms or the M8 though.

All in all i prefer the supplied hood personally. Was the same on the 35/2. Never lost one in 20+ years.

The classic vented metal hood, 12686, also works well with this lens...

Don't remember the 12686. Is it the plastic version of the 12585? The latter works fine as well but it cannot be reverted on the 28 because of the focus tab. Not that small a shade anyhow. How about the 12504?

Jaapv, the shade is in the mail, on its way to you. It's not only small but also very light, boxed including jiffy and stamps less then 50 grms.

Post some pics?

Thanks; Nice to have a black one, Thom :)

Yes, it fits the Summicron 35 asph 35 as well.

The advantage is that it is tighter that the supplied hood; it vignettes on film. That means that it is more effective than the original one on the M8.

The original hood of the Summicron, which is the same hood as the 28, is virtually useless for reducing flare on that lens on the M8; it is far too wide if it works on a 28 on film-size as well.

Just noticed I am in the wrong forum here I was talking about the M8! Moderator!!!

I moved this because your original post said nothing about the M8, and was an enquiry that was of general interest to all M users and not just M8 ones. Now, film users will not have the benefit..

Your reference to the M8 has come along a lot later in the thread.

Point is, Andy, it may well vignette on a film body, I don't know.... I forgot to include the word "M8"in the OP. Unfortunately this forum has a limited (in time) editing feature.
