Let me apologize in advance if what I’m going to say is cynical or unreasonable to someone.

Over the past a year or so I have been mulling over this lens. For couple of times I had in the shopping cart but I bailed out at the last step.

Now again I’m seriously thinking to purchase it especially a price increase of all Leica product is coming in the near future.

However every time I came back to this thread to affirm my decision one way or the other, I chickened out again. I was telling myself, oh man is this lens really this bad enough that people taking mediocre pictures but still feeling so good about them have the audacity to post them publicly as an obvious show-off?

It’s just so subjective isn't it and what you say could apply to quite a number of lenses.

Received my Steel Rim today - delightfully small. What are folks doing about a lens cap when utilizing even the smaller profile hood? Is there an OEM lens cap that would work? Right now, I'm contemplating just using it without a hood, with just a filter and the lens cap that was included.

Which filter are you using? I tried a B+W MRC Master 007 and the cap is too loose to stay on now.

Edit: Looks like the Leica E46 pinch cap will fit fine, so I'll get something like that.

There is an OEM cap numbered 14231 which holds nicely, but you won’t be able to use the hood any more. I prefer it this way for 2 reasons:

1) after around 50 rolls without any hood I’ve experienced flaring just a few times and I don’t think it is bad after all. If you need clinical look - get the APO.
2) the lens is so compact it transformed the camera completely and that is way bigger advantage than having a hood.

alternatively there are some cheap 46mm caps with buttons in the middle, like older Nikon or Panasonic caps, they would fit inside the hood. I have a “no name” one, but couldn’t resist using a secure OEM sacrificing the hood

Just to leave a note here for others, I ended up getting a 46mm pinch cap (this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GM4GRY0?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details), which has a few benefits:

- You can use it just on the lens with no filter and no hood

- You can use it with any filter (and no hood)

- If you use the new low profile vented hood that Leica provides, you can use it inside the hood, thereby keeping the length of the lens + hood unchanged.

I looked at the Leica 46mm hood, but not only is it 4x the price (though in the grand scheme of the price of the lens, a rounding error), but the pinch tabs are on the outside of the cap (not the center), which increases the diameter and so it won't fit within the vented hood. If you really want something that goes on the outside of the vented hood, a 58mm cap will work.

I was initially thinking of using the lens without a hood, but given how low profile the vented hood is, I like it for flare control (if desired) and for a bit extra knock protection.

That vintage look of the ‘lux 35 SR reedition… this shot could have been taken in the 1970s or 80s… ;)
