If it is of any help, here is a real time comparison: I just shot a fashion calendar in the custom shop (12 motives, 874 images including BTS) in the perid of 8 hours all on one battery (chimping and showing to client & model included) of the M10-R which has worse batteries capacity than the M11. I did switch off the Leica during styling & location changes.

Yes indeed - I leave it off when I'm shooting . . . at least until Fotos supports Geotagging

Even when fotos support geotagging, the communication between camera and the phone is through bluetooth low power energy, which would always keep connected without hurting the battery

For what it's worth by comparison-

Just spent 25 days in France with my M11.

Using daily multiple times.

Approx 700 shots taken in total - DNG only.

Recharged once during the whole trip.

Did not use VisioFlex.

Average amount of live view and chimping.

Battery about 15% by the time I got back home.

Battery usage seems outstanding from prior experience with M10P.

(Camera is also outstanding!)

Hope that helps.

A quick update.  Late last week the dealer (Red Dot Cameras, London) swiftly provided a replacement battery - and I expected to be able to breather a sigh of relief.  After a twelve-hour charge I used the M11 in a variety of modes (i.e. OVF, LV (LCD) & LV (EVF, extended mode).  After 198 exposures the battery was down to 30% and after using FOTOS to download a dozen frames it was down to 20% by the time I called it quits for the evening.  Battery given another overnight charge.

Today, with 100% charge and similar usage, by mid-afternoon and 161 exposures it was reading 10%.  Not for the first time there were intermittent brief periods where the body was noticeably warm.

Body, battery and charger will be returned to Red Dot and hopefully the situation will be speedily resolved. Previous experience with digital Leicas (M9, M240, M10M) has been absolutely problem free (I'll not mention my M7!) so to say the current situation is an unwelcome annoyance is (on a personal level) the understatement of the year.  Not what one expects when spending £7500!

PS - it is a good job I am enamoured by the results I have been getting in my brief acquaintanceship!

regarding unusual temperature of camera, a coulpe of weeks ago I had the visoflex exchanged due to a defect (basically it was not seen by the camera intermittently).

at an event, using the replacement unity, with the burst mode i noticed an extremely hot camera body, not sure what the issue was but it did feel odd.

not had the same ever again but it could be a software bug?

in which case perhaps your batter is also lasting little as the camera hardware is stuck in some task, and running really hot.

not sure it makes sense but cameras are basically computers these days...

G.

  • 7 months later...

I am too suffering from short battery usage (c.180 shots for full battery) plus download photos on performance mode, after having the camera for 1 month. I don’t have EVF and have auto off set to 5 mins and screen 30 seconds and normal brightness. I do have the wireless option set to Performance and 5Ghz (as opposed to Eco and Airplane which are both Bluetooth).   My style is to walk around taking pictures as I see good compositions so could be nothing in 30 mins then 20 photos in 10 minutes.

I spoke to Leica and their first question was EVF. They then thought that the Wi-Fi might be very inefficiently constantly looking for a device. This is very odd way of working, as if I want to connect camera to IPhone/iPad I will do that via the app in the hotel. If this is draining the battery, it is not good that a year has passed on this model and no fix. My iPhone has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth permanently enabled and that works very efficiently, so Wi-Fi is not by default inefficient.  I will switch to Eco to see if that makes a difference.
Leica offered a new battery for me to test if that improves it, otherwise the camera will need to be replaced as this is massively shorter battery life than what others report., even accepting that the battery is only on its third full recharge cycle.

When trying to determine if there was a problem with the seeming excess power consumption of my M11, wireless settings were something I did not consider as, apart from initial set-up I never used the FOTOS app.  Due to the issues listed earlier in the thread I sent the whole lot (body, battery, charger) back to the dealer for investigation - they tested and reported that power consumption was in line with the expected 700+ exposures.  Rather than insisting that the camera go back to Leica for further investigation I bit the bullet and have learned to live with a battery life that (in my hands) is some 50% less than expected - I had no wish to lose use of the camera for months on end.

Having read your post and out of curiosity I set mine in airplane mode and 60 minutes power setting - the battery dropped by 10%.  Set to performance mode, the battery dropped by 15%.  Reverted to airplane mode and against expectations the drop was 20%. Change to eco mode and the drop was 15%.  No idea how that compares with what other users find.

Given my light usage (walkabouts of an hour or so) the battery life is sufficient but there is still the niggling worry that something in the depths of the camera is using more power than it should do.  Anyway, I hope you are able to resolve the situation with your M11.
