delander † Posted September 19, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 19, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I post this for all those interested in this sort of thing. This is a shot I took shortly after receiving my M8 with the elmarit 28mm/ASPH (the shop had one and I bought it with the camera). It is not an interesting shot, the sky was very overcast, light was not good and it was shot RAW at 320 iso hand held. I don't know (most annoying Leica!) what the f number was but I normally use 5.6 for this sort of thing. When I looked at it carefully in C1 I noticed the fact that the far away pylon was surprisingly well resolved. I inlcude the full shot and the crop. I think it is rather amazing and would be interested to hear others views? Jeff Welcome, dear visitor! sm23221 Posted September 19, 2007 Share #3 Posted September 19, 2007 It's exciting for one to discover but we're not surprised.
johnbuckley Posted September 19, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 19, 2007 Sometimes we take living with a Leica for granted. As Jaap says, we lucky M8 owners have been marveling over the quality of the camera for some time. The combination of an M8 and good glass -- and as Sean Reid and others have pointed out, it doesn't have to be Leica glass (though it helps!) -- records detail you might not ever have expected from a 35 mm-sized camera/sensor. Enjoy it.
fotografr Posted September 19, 2007 Share #5 Posted September 19, 2007 I would expect the tower to hold together, but the power lines even show up. That is something else!
Joe Mondello Posted September 19, 2007 Share #6 Posted September 19, 2007 I would expect the tower to hold together, but the power lines even show up. That is something else! Gotta agree with this. Also there is still quite a lot of detail in the stones of the path for its full length. I don't know (most annoying Leica!) what the f number was but I normally use 5.6 for this sort of thing. Well about the f-stop thing in the EXIF, it would require RF lenses with electronic communication to the camera -- and those don't exist!

Guest tummydoc Posted September 19, 2007 Share #8 Posted September 19, 2007 OT but where was that shot taken? The venue looks terribly familiar but I can't place it.
M6J Posted September 19, 2007 Share #9 Posted September 19, 2007 A very nice example of what M8 and a great piece of glass can deliver!

delander † Posted September 19, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted September 19, 2007 Some of this performance is due to C1 (OK we know that). The original image from C1 used 30/3 standard sharpening. Just for interest, below is a C1 crop with no sharpening and the one from ACR (right) with default sharpening. Jeff Welcome, dear visitor! carstenw Posted September 19, 2007 Share #12 Posted September 19, 2007 Does "no sharpening" mean that you didn't touch the slider, set it to 0, or moved it all the way to the left? Only the latter gives you no sharpening, I believe.
delander † Posted September 19, 2007 Author Share #13 Posted September 19, 2007 Set it to zero by moving it all the way over to the left. Jeff

guy Posted September 19, 2007 Share #16 Posted September 19, 2007 I've had this moment a few times over the summer, taking shots in Spain and being stunned by what holds up in the background. I'll gripe about firmware and freezes and backfocus (and, lately, how LOUD it is) but all that's made up for when you look at the files and think, Wow – that's cool... okram Posted September 19, 2007 Share #17 Posted September 19, 2007 Hey, try C1 4 beta. You can get even more detail...
grduprey Posted September 20, 2007 Share #18 Posted September 20, 2007 I've got the 28/2.8 Asph also and it is indeed a phenominal performer. The small/micro detail is very impressive. Not bad for a budget lens. Gives me hope for the new Summarits. I am currently experimenting with it on my M6TTL... Gene
sean_reid Posted September 20, 2007 Share #19 Posted September 20, 2007 Indeed it is a pleasure and it comes from the lack of AA filter plus excellent lenses. In fact, yesterday, I was rather dazzled by the technical file quality I was seeing from the M8 with a CV 25P...and that lens costs about $300. Cheers, Sean
