Is it safe to use this collapsible lens with M11 ?  I am offered it for 900$.

Yes, go for it.

I had two in different periods ( one silver + one black) for many years using on film and digital Leica M without any trouble, collapsed or not.

Now I replaced them with Summarit-M 2.5/50, lighter, more aperture blades for light balls, almost as compact and no need to collapse/uncollapse when in use.

The new wise suggestion I learn here is, mount&unmount with the lens "uncollapsed", even if when I used, this was no concern and no accident.

On an M10 it's perfectly safe to collapse it. However the recommendation is not to mount or unmount the lens when collapsed, as it could hit the sides of the mount where the sensor, rangefinder focus roller etc are located. Should not be a problem with the M11 as well, I think.

I just read that the tube of Elmar-M 2.8/50 (last version), when retracted, has 20.5mm. Quite a lot. For instance  2/50mm Summicron (screw-mount) has less than 14mm when it is collapsed.

I will definitely ask Leica support to be sure.

Great lens on the M11. The lens does not touch anything into the body when retracting it but the tube is very close to the roller cam (on M6J below) so better keep the lens extended when mounting and removing it as usual.

So once it is mounted I can collapse it without any worries. Right?

Having a chance to compare this Elmar-M 50/2.8 with Summicron M 50/2 (serial numb. 47xx), I am surprised that Elmar.M is sharper than Cron. It was just a quick test from a tripod.

If you redo the test and get the same result, your Summicron might be in need of some adjustment. The Elmar is really sharp indeed, but the Summicron should be the same, in particular at f2.8

At what aperture(s) did you focus? Did you change focusing during your test?

Yes, sure :-), 2.8 ; 4.0; 5.6 on both lenses. I put the numbers at the top of the pictures.

It might be a silly question, but what is the reason to rotate a front ring on the lens (marked in red)?

To start focusing, I have to extend the tube. Then rotating the focus ring, the tube automatically collapses or extends. The aperture ring is evident. But the front ring?
