Picking up an SL2S and want to shoot my M glass on it. None of my M lenses are 6 bit (most are legacy lenses from the 60’s). Is the Leica adapter still preferred over day a novaflex or Urth? The price difference is substantial so I am wondering if I need it. On my digital M body I just select the lens manually in the menu, so I presumed this was possible on the SL2S but wondered if there was some other benefit I was missing to the native Leica adapter at 6x the cost of a 3rd party.

technically spoken you do not need Leica original one. you may have an issue with warranty if you use non-original with new lenses and something went wrong. but as you have old ones no issue.

On the CL there is improved functionality with the Leica adapter versus third party ones (focus zooming becomes enabled on one of the thumb wheels). Not sure if there is any difference for the SL2, but it’s probably worth checking the manual to see if the topic is covered (again, it is in the CL manual).

I have the SL601 and downgraded from the original code reading Leica adaptor to a cheap TTArtisans one.

While you can still select your lens from a menu, some functionality is crippled, such as auto-ISO. It also no longer puts the lens type in EXIF data. Focusing zooming etc still works fine. For the minimal amount of time that I use M lenses on the SL I don't care (honestly I don't think they work well on there from a usability standpoint - I am the exception here though) and it was worth the $400 back in my pocket.

Auto ISO will still work, you just have to go to the Auto ISO Settings and change the default Auto or equation-based setting to a minimum shutter speed instead. I chose 1/15 sec., now Auto ISO works fine in Aperture Priority.

I just picked up a Leica brand M to sl  adaptor  somehow the Auto zoom is not working

if I remember correctly as soon as you touched the focus tab it would automatically zoom in

I have it turned on in the menus but somehow it’s not working. AMA missing something?

you are missing the fact that this is not an option.

there is no mechanical sensor. you have to pouch in joystick. the SL2 never had the function

There is presumably no mechanical link between an M lens and SL camera when you turn the focus ring, so I believe this isn’t possible.  It would have worked on an M camera with its add-on EVF though!

Was that only on the m bodies ? Am I having a memory slip

M lenses have auto magnification only on M bodies. L lenses have auto magnification on L bodies.

it looks like my mind was slipping, you are all right it was on my M cameras

Coming from the M11 to the SL2-S, I don't miss the auto-zoom with M lenses at all. It's actually more serene to zoom in when I choose to versus when I start focusing.
