A dragonfly friend . . .

For me, probably the most difficult bird to photograph---twitchy and erratic, and almost never at eye level:

Scarlet-Backed Flowerpecker . . .

One more to show where he gets his name . . .

You have to stop🙃 (but don't please)... I am not/I will not/I don't want/I don't need - all playing on repeat in my head... no no no, not re-buying the 100-400, I'm done!!!

Seriously Rob, some lovely stuff, a delight to see, that Tailorbird from the previous post just exceptional.

From the pics you've shared, Jayne, I'd speculate that the Lumix 70-300mm is a notch or two better than the Sigma both optically and functionally.

Being a slave to reach (and still having a tripod collar left over from my previous copy), and with no Lumix S gear available locally, I opted for the Sigma.  Although I don't regret it, anyone considering it should be aware of limitations encountered when pairing it with the CL, not the least of which is focus jitters when using AF-C.

Also, as with the shot of the white corella above, I had to put the focus point crosshairs on the contrasting edge between the beak and face feathers just to get the setup to focus at all.  Manual focus?  Well, switching from AF to MF instantly racks focus to either MFD or infinity, and focus-by-wire doesn't help much.  AF hit rate on yesterday's outing was about 45%, lower on the corella.  Extreme patience, however,  is rewarded with very good imagery by optics that are far better than the price point of the lens would imply.

Bottom line for me is that it's great with the CL when I want a compact, lightweight setup (1793g) and Leica colors for a walk where I'm likely to encounter birds, dragonflies, flowers, etc.  For dedicated bird-chasing, I reach for either the RF gear or the Nikon 500mm PF.

And to keep this legal:

Pointing a camera at these two cheeky girls usually gets silly poses or faces,  been playing around with film profiles too, probably as overdone as the pose😉.

I'm coming dangerously close to being that lens as well. If I went out and took more photos I would have done by now!
